Our attempt at three-on-the-spin was scuppered by a 25/1 shot at Nottingham yesterday, but the horse ran well and was just reeled in late in the piece, after pulling well clear of his expected rivals.

For Saturday’s Nap of the Day we’re headed for the Curragh over in Ireland, and one of my favourite jockeys …

Nap Of The Day Saturday

Today’s Horse Races

13:30 Curragh – Currawood @ 6/5

This is a warm little two-year-old maiden, over 7f, and several of the leading Irish yards are represented.

The selection is trained by Paddy Twomey in County Tipperary, and will be ridden by the brilliant Billy Lee. One racecourse appearance so far, finishing a 2.5l second here in a good-looking maiden three weeks ago.

Currawood is an Acclamation colt out of a Sea The Stars mare, so beautifully bred for this – and has a couple of early-closing Group race entries for August and September.

Those entries are very encouraging and hint at the kind of vibes being given on the home gallops, as well as that very encouraging debut. Likely to be popular too is Aidan O’Brien’s Wootton Bassett colt Ides Of March, who perhaps needed his debut appearance here last month when fading over a furlong less than today’s trip.

He’ll no doubt strip fitter but at this 7f distance Currawood did nothing wrong and is entitled to come on a bundle. Johnny Murtagh has a decent-looking entry, Dakota Blue, who can also get involved – but I wouldn’t want to be with anyone other than Currawood.
