Owen McMahon's NAP of the Day

Last week was a frustrating one on the NAP of the Day front, with multiple near-misses and hard-luck stories.

Fingers crossed for more joy this week, starting with this royally-bred filly at Lingfield.

NAP of the Day – Tuesday, July 9

  • 14:25 Lingfield – French Mistress @ 4/6

My best bet on Tuesday is FRENCH MISTRESS in the opener at Lingfield.

Fourteen go to post for the 1m2f maiden stakes and the Kevin Philippart De Foy-trained daughter of Kingman is a clear standout in my book.

Out of a Listed-winning Sea The Stars mare and as a half-sister to Group 3 winner Mohaafeth, she’s bred in the purple and has surely inherited a fair share of her relatives’ ability for connections to keep her in training as an unraced four-year-old.

She’s not unraced anymore, as she made her belated debut at Nottingham back in May, finishing a highly-promising second in what was a relatively decent novice affair.

The winner, More Thunder, had a run under his belt before heading to Colwick Park and he’s since given a good account of himself in an even better contest at Newmarket last month – while Leicester Square, who was over a length behind the selection in third, won on his subsequent start.

Given it was French Mistress’ first-ever appearance and she was giving weight to the majority of her 11 rivals, I thought it was a very pleasing performance.

She shaped like improvement would follow – and plenty of it too. She was slow out the gates and took a keen hold under Benoit De Lay Sayette, who maintains the partnership on Tuesday, and yet was only narrowly touched off in the end.

I think this is a much easier assignment. Her main rivals according to the 14:25 Lingfield Odds are Fox Vision, who is winless in eight starts and appears to be going backwards, and Poncho, who operates at a lowly level over jumps and has shown little in two outings on the flat.

She’s priced accordingly of course, but I make the selection extremely tough to beat here.
