Nap of the Day: It’s to fair Donny we go, and an emerging star …

There’s a stack of tremendous racing on Saturday, and we’re nipping off to South Yorkshire for our nap of the day. Not much joy regarding the last couple – agonising near-misses and disappointments, but that’s sport. We go again in Donny’s 13:57 which is an apprentice heat on Town Moor.

13:57 Doncaster – Liberty Coach @ 5/2

A sporting nap for Saturday – but there’s method (hopefully) in the slight madness (it’s an apprentice race).

Liberty Coach is a three-year-old gelding out of a Galileo mare. He’s trained by the seasoned combo of John and Sean Quinn in North Yorkshire, and gets one of the race’s more experienced pilots up top in Brandon Wilkie, who rides for an enormous selection of trainers.

That’s a compliment in itself, as he gets his first experience on a racecourse of Liberty Coach. The horse has been very consistent so far after five runs, the last two being handicaps off 74, and 73.

Having tried 12f last time he slips back to 10f, and though on the premises for both those last two runs (close-up 4th on both occasions), he faded close home last time and the 1m 2f on such a flat galloping track should be ideal.

He’s also popped down another pound to a mark of 72 – even better. The grader could have him just about spot-on now.

Brandon’s edge given the wide range of trainers he’s encountered will surely be crucial – and this calendar year he’s had 24 winners at a rate of around 11%, which is very respectable.

He has competition from Mark Winn on the figures and experience front, but he rides an outsider here. It is trained though by David O’Meara (Spring Festival) so warrants our utmost respect.

I’m hoping this can be an appropriate reward for the consistent form shown by Liberty Coach and he’s my nap of the day for Saturday.
