Nap of the Day: Hollie to shine for Harry
Great winning nap for the feature yesterday (Opera Singer in the Nassau). It was a peculiar old race but they pay out at the jam stick and her head was in front where it mattered. I think it’s fair to say that favourite Emily Upjohn ran no sort of race from way out the back, and wide. All a bit odd, but that’s sport.
Friday’s Nap Of The Day comes from the Midlands in a slightly less exalted contest, but involving a beautifully-bred colt nevertheless. Intrigued? Kindly read on …
Nap Of The Day Friday
- 15:10 Southwell – Shamran @ 7/2
15:10 Southwell – Shamran @ 7/2
Given the ongoing excitement of Goodwood and Galway let’s take a wee breath and enjoy action elsewhere for a change – as we turn our attention to a very modest little Southwell maiden, over a mile, for three-year-olds.
My selection Shamran however is bred in the purple all right – a son of the mighty Kingman, and out of a Galileo mare. Didn’t run at two, but has had a couple of outings at three in the last couple of months.
First up a Chelmsford maiden in May, fading late over a mile, and then a much more promising effort at Windsor, again at this one-mile trip, keeping on to be beaten by just over a length to a William Haggas-trained filly.
That was a very decent effort and among rivals that day he beat an Andrew Balding colt who was long odds-on. Now he looks to have in my book a very bright chance of shedding the maiden tag and has been found an ideal opportunity by trainer Harry Charlton.
He’s booked the magnificent Hollie Doyle, who wears these Imad Alsagar colours with such distinction, to do the necessary up top.
Shamran is drawn in the two box, and potential favourite in the Southwell 15:10 odds Skipper is out in number 13, which could well be an advantageous element. Our colt found plenty of improvement between runs one and two and there’s every indication that spin three will unlock even more potential.
Being this well-bred, maiden success and possibly more is a huge factor, and I’m taking Hollie to do the business in Hayley Turner-land on Friday afternoon.
