Ignoring Thursday’s tip who’s yet to run, our NAP of the Day column has posted nine winners from 12 selections (75% strike rate) in the last 14 days. Form is temporary, as we know, but I’m hoping it won’t let up just yet.
That takes us to Friday’s fancy – an Andrew Balding-trained filly whose claims for Newmarket’s opener are only boosted by the current weather forecast.
NAP of the Day
- 13:50 Newmarket – Flora Of Bermuda @ 9/2
Could we get testing ground at Newmarket on Friday? It almost certainly won’t be bottomless, but plenty of rain has fallen over HQ on Thursday morning and there’s more forecast overnight. Potentially 15mm, according to reports.
That will be music to the ears of Andrew Balding and Oisin Murphy ahead of the G3 Cornwallis Stakes that opens the card, as Flora Of Bermuda loves a bit of cut in the ground.
She’s encountered ‘Soft’ twice – firstly when readily beating subsequent Group 3 winner Juniper Berries by a widening 4L at Glorious Goodwood, before a very respectable second to the 113-rated Big Evs in the G2 Flying Childers Stakes at Doncaster during the Betfred St Leger Festival.
None of her 14 rivals boast comparable form in such conditions. In fact, some have actively avoided it in the past – including current favourite Inquisitively and Irish raider Asean.
I must stress, I don’t think the selection needs soft ground. Her effort in the Queen Mary at Royal Ascot, when 6/26, on good ground is evidence of that, but she’s undoubtedly better on an easier surface.
If the ground doesn’t cut up all that much, I still give Flora Of Bermuda every chance. I fancy her, no matter the conditions, to beat the likes of Miaharris and co, but I am fearful of Inquisitively. Not nearly as much on good to soft or worse, though.
All that being said, 9/2 about Balding’s filly looks great value to me, especially if the heavens do indeed open later on.
