Wednesday’s NAP comes from Lingfield, where an Ed Dunlop-trained filly is taken to back up a highly-promising racecourse debut.

If you can, I urge you to watch the replay of BRIAR ROSE‘s debut at Kempton just over two weeks ago. “Should come on for the run” is certainly the assessment.

Ed Dunlop’s two-year-old daughter of Outstrip wasn’t fancied to get off the mark first time up, but you wouldn’t have thought so based on the clear promise she showed in defeat.

Slow out of the gates, she was in rear throughout and, as a result, found traffic in running – not once, but twice. Oh, and her jockey dropped the reigns at a crucial stage too.

The form of that race isn’t special, but it’s far from awful. The winner Miss Mach One is officially rated 79 and the third-placed Bint Havana Grey is 77, and Briar Rose was only around 3L away and staying on at the finish.

It doesn’t need to be red-hot form for the selection to win this 7f maiden, either. Unless any of the newcomers – such as Queen’s Music or Alwedad – are above average, this is hers to lose.

She should appreciate the extra furlong, providing she settles better. She was extremely green the last day, which can be excused first time up, and I’d like to see her come out of the gates smartly and race a lot more professionally on Wednesday afternoon.

Even if some of that greenness remains, I must stress that this looks a very weak contest and ultimately I’ll be disappointed if she’s not, at the very least, bang there at the finish.
