To conclude a busy weekend in the WNBA, Sunday, July 30th will feature six games and all 12 teams spread out throughout the day. To kick the day off, the Minnesota Lynx will battle the Connecticut Sun at Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut. The game will be aired nationally on CBS Sports Network. Leading up to the contest, here are our Lynx vs Sun odds and best bets.

The Lynx come into the game playing much better than they did earlier in the season, having won two straight and six of their last 10 games while holding a record of 12-13 on the year. Minnesota, which has gone 12-7 since starting the year 0-6, is coming off an 88-83 upset victory over the New York Liberty on Friday in Brooklyn.

The Sun enter the game as one of the top three teams in the WNBA with a record of 18-6 overall, good enough to sit in third place in the standings and on the heels of New York in second place. Connecticut, winners of seven of its last 10 and three straight, are coming off an 88-83 victory over the Dallas Wings on Tuesday in Texas.

Sun Have Owned Season Series

Sunday’s game is the third of four meetings between Minnesota and Connecticut, with the fourth and final contest taking place in two nights on Tuesday in Connecticut. Entering the third meeting, the Sun holds a 2-0 season series lead over the Lynx.

In the first game of the season on June 1 in Minnesota, Connecticut edged past Minnesota 89-84 to steal a game on the road. The post-heavy Sun owned the battle in the paint, holding 52-26 points in the paint advantage against a Lynx squad that couldn’t match the inside presence.

In the second meeting on June 22 in Minneapolis, the Sun won that game with more ease, blowing out the Lynx 89-68 to hold a 2-0 season series advantage. Connecticut exploded for 12 threes in that game while holding Minnesota to just 31.6% shooting from the field en route to a blowout.

Both Teams Playing Well Despite Injuries

Minnesota and Connecticut are somewhat similar in that they are both playing well without key players in the lineup right now due to injuries.

For the Lynx, they have turned their season around after a brutal 0-6 start to the year, moving from the bottom of the WNBA standings into the playoff picture and threatening to move up even higher with a few more victories.

Friday’s road win against New York was one of Minnesota’s best wins of the season thus far, mainly due it occurring without Napheesa Collier, who is playing at an MVP level this year. Collier exited Wednesday’s game against Washington with an ankle injury, with the expectation of her absence being around 7-10 days.

Without Collier, Lynx rookies Diamond Miller and Dorka Juhász have been consistent contributors on both ends of the floor, while the steady play and leadership of Kayla McBride have kept the Lynx afloat in Collier’s absence.

When it comes to the Sun, they have been a top-three team all season long, though they still aren’t getting much love from oddsmakers when it comes to the 2023 WNBA Championship odds.

Connecticut is right there with New York as the best team in the WNBA behind the Las Vegas Aces, currently tied for second in the league standings. The Sun is doing all of this while being without their star center in the middle, with Brionna Jones out for the season with an Achilles injury. In her absence, Alyssa Thomas and DeWanna Bonner have picked up that workload and will continue to do that for the rest of the season.

Keys to the Game

Two keys to the battle between Connecticut and Minnesota will be trying to contain opposing offenses from three and also taking advantage of stars being absent on both teams.

In the first two games, the biggest separator has been the deep ball and which team is able to limit the other from three. In the first matchup, Minnesota held Connecticut in check in that area, resulting in a close game. The Sun lit it up from three in the second game, resulting in a blowout. Connecticut ranks third in the WNBA in three-point percentage, while Minnesota is 11th.

As mentioned above, both teams are without key stars in this contest, which will be felt. Connecticut has had more experience without Jones than Minnesota has had without Collier, which means the Sun could be in a better position to handle that adversity better.

Lynx vs Sun Picks

Minnesota has played better as of late, but Connecticut has been even more impressive while remaining as a top team in the league now in the second half of the year. The Sun has also been a dominant team at home, holding an 8-3 record at home compared to the Lynx at just 5-6 on the road. Expect Connecticut to defend home court and extend its winning streak to four straight.

As for the bet best of the game, go with the Lynx covering the 11-point spread set. Connecticut should win the game, but Minnesota should be able to keep it within 11 points.

  • The Pick: Minnesota +11 (-110)
