  • Read below for Miami vs Cal prediction, odds and spreads

The college football world loves “Football After Dark” and on Saturday, September 28, 2024, fans get their wish. Yes, the Miami Hurricanes take on the Cal Golden Bears in the ACC.

This game marks both teams’ second conference game of the season. Miami is 1-0 in conference while Cal is still looking for their first win in the ACC (0-1).

The Hurricanes roll in as 10.5-point favorites, with the over/under set at 54.5 points, according to Caesars Sportsbook. The game will be live on ESPN, with kickoff scheduled for 10:30 p.m. EDT.

Miami vs Cal Prediction

Miami enjoyed the mother of all great Septembers and stands at 5-0.  The Hurricanes outscoring their opponents 247-75 through five games. However, the Hurricanes nearly lost to Virginia Tech in one of the games of the season. The Hokies nearly won the contest with a late Hail Mary. We may never truly know who caught the ball.

The Hurricanes are airing the ball out. Miami quarterback Cameron Ward tossed a conference-leading 18 touchdowns on the season Ward has a 70.2% completion percentage while racking up more than 1,750 yards through the air. Miami has had some great quarterbacks in the past and Ward is trying to add his name to the list.

While Ward is making waves along with the rest of the Miami offense, the question becomes how do they handle flying all the way to the West Coast? The After Dark experience impacts teams in different ways.

Now, the Cal Golden Bears have been a bit of a surprise themselves. Though they dropped their conference opener, the Golden Bears are 3-1 and do play some stout defense. Holding Florida State on the road to 14 points was interesting.

The rough offensive numbers are plain to see. Cal ranks 100th in points scored but 12th in points allowed. While Fernando Mendoza has performed okay (5 TD, 2 INT), the rushing attack led by Jaivian Thomas and Jaydn Ott (400 yards, 3 TD combined) could find some holes in the Miami defense.

The concern for Miami is can they break through on the road against a stubborn defense. Cal will likely allow more than 182 yards (season average) but can they bend yet not crack.

I’m predicting a Miami win with a likely Cal cover. Miami has the potential to blow this game wide open yet Cal plays different at home. Surely, this game was circled on the calendar.

Miami-Cal Pick:

  • Cal +10.5 (-105)

Miami vs Cal Spread

College football Week 6 spreads are intriguing for Miami vs Cal and some of the other top games of the week.

The Halftime Spread Is 6.5

Another pick to consider is the spread after 30 minutes. Cal is +6.5 at -115 which means this way not last so long. Our suggestion is to wait on this as Cal should be able to keep this one tight throughout. The number may move anyway since some bettors may go all in with Miami anyway.

Miami vs Cal Odds

Miami is favored by 10.5 points with -420 moneyline odds, implying a 80.7% win probability. Cal are +320 underdogs, representing just a 23.8% chance to pull the upset, per the oddsmakers.

The total is set at 54.5 points, with even -110 juice for each side. This suggests a somewhat higher-scoring affair, which makes sense given Miami is averaging 49.4 points a game and allowed 34 last week.

Team Spread Moneyline Total
Miami -10.5 (-115) -420 Over 54.5 (-110)
Cal +10.5 (-105) +320 Under 54.5 (-110)

Some notable line movement: Miami has been right around double digitse before inching into the 10.5 to 11 range. The overwhelming dollars are on Nebraska here at a whopping 93% and betting percentage is 64% for the spread.

It’s easy to see why bettors like Miami. They survived a huge test against Virginia Tech and figure the Hurricanes will rebound this week.

The Hurricanes are 3-2 ATS. They were favored by 17.5 points over Virginia Tech and Cal could give Miami a few headaches very late on Saturday night.

Miami vs Cal Head to Head

The programs have met four times previously, with both teams splitting the previous matchups:

  • Oct 28, 2008: Cal 24, Miami 17 (Emerald Bowl)
  • Sep 15, 1990: Miami 52, Cal 24
  • Sep 16, 1989: Miami 31, Cal 3
  • Oct 10, 1964: Cal 9, Miami 7

Their most recent meeting in 2008 was pretty exciting but then again that was almost 16 years ago. Cameron Ward and Miami want to harken back to those 1989 and 1990 days where the Hurricanes were absolutely intimidating to play against.

Sometimes it is easier said than done to replicate a time gone by. Can the Miami offense help the Hurricanes take care of business? Saturday night at Berkley should be a fun one. After all, anything can happen in the Pac-12 I mean ACC after dark.
