McStay to miss 2024 season for Magpies after ACL injury in training

McStay to miss 2024 season for Magpies after ACL injury in training

  • By Admin

Collingwood has received an early blow to its campaign for back-to-back flags, with key forward Dan McStay ruled out for the 2024 season with another knee injury.

McStay missed out on the Magpies’ grand final win over Brisbane, after he suffered a high-grade medial ligament injury in his team’s dramatic one-point preliminary final victory over GWS.

McStay kicked two early goals before injuring his right knee in the third quarter and was ruled out at the final change.

After a period of rehab, the Magpies forward made his return this week as part of Collingwood’s preseason training.

However on Friday morning McStay picked up a left knee injury during training, and the club confirmed their worst fears later in the day, saying scans had shown he had ruptured his ACL.

“This is unfortunate news for Dan, who is likely to miss the 2024 season,” Collingwood’s executive general manager of football, Graham Wright, said in a statement.

“We are all extremely disappointed for Dan, and our entire Club will rally around him during this difficult time and throughout his rehab journey.”

The news means the Magpies will have to rely on Ash Johnson or Reef McInnes to partner Brodie Mihocek up forward.
