The 2024 Magnus Ver Magnusson Strongman Classic (MVMSC) on Nov. 22-25 was a triumphant showing for Poland’s Mateusz Kieliszkowski. He scored his first elite strongman contest victory since the 2019 World’s Ultimate Strongman (WUS) Dubai contest and set a stone press world record of 151 kilograms in the opening event.

Kieliszkowski shared his contest recap, breaking down his victory and how he rewrote the record books.

Kieliszkowski knew he was advantaged in the stone press event when he opened with 122 kilograms — the most of any athlete in the field. Upon his second successful lift at 142 kilograms, he locked up first-place points and did not need to take a third attempt.

However, Kieliszkowski was offered the chance to set the world record and decided to go for it despite the additional toll it might take on his body with the rest of the competition still to come. The heavier stone was wider than the previous ones he lifted, creating a new challenge from what he was accustomed to in training.

The wider block meant that Kieliszkowski’s grip had to widen with it. This adjustment limited the leverage of his triceps compared to the narrower stones.

After having to dump the 151-kilogram stone behind his head on his first attempt with it, Kieliszkowski was allotted one more attempt, his fourth overall, since a world record hung in the balance.

Kieliszkowski understood the adjustment necessary to contend with the wider, slippery stone. Fortunately, a technique alternative was all he needed since he routinely trained with 160-kilogram stones leading up to the competition, well more than the 151 kilograms he was contending with.

Ultimately, Kieliszkowski locked the world record stone overhead and received the down command from the judge to rewrite history. It indicated his shape for the contest overall, as he won the overall gold by a 4.5-point margin.
