Man United vs Barnsley Prediction: Rashford to strike against the Tykes
Manchester United welcome Barnsley to Old Trafford in the third round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night (20:00, live on Sky Sports Main Event), with the sides having contrasting starts to the season.
Barnsley eliminated Sheffield United in the previous round to set up a dream tie at Old Trafford, and they’ll be hopeful of causing an upset, after enjoying a positive start to the League 1 campaign. Read on for my Man United vs Barnsley prediction, as well as the latest team news and match odds.
Man United vs Barnsley Betting Tips
Team News
Erik ten Hag is likely to use this game to give some minutes to his fringe players, so plenty of squad rotation is expected.
Matthijs de Ligt, Lisandro Martinez and Noussair Mazraoui were substituted with suspected knocks on Saturday, although the former has revealed it was only due to cramp. Casemiro, Alejandro Garnacho and Antony could all be promoted from the bench for this one.
Barnsley’s one confirmed absentee is Conor Hourihane, as Max Watters and Fabio Jalo both returned from injury at the weekend off the bench.
Donovan Pines was taken off at half time as a precaution in the defeat to Stevenage, but he is expected to feature here.
United are 2/9 favourites to win, giving them an implied win probability of 81.8%, while the draw is 9/2 and the Barnsley victory is available 11/1 – all 90 minute betting.
The Red Devils are 1/9 to win the tie, and visitors are 5/1 to advance to next round. Over 2.5 goals can be backed at 8/15, while both teams to score is 11/10.
Man United to win and both teams to score – yes @ 15/8
United have won six of their last seven Carabao Cup ties to nil and Saturday’s 3-0 win at Southampton may have restored some belief in their defence.
However, the Red Devils’ backline has continued to look vulnerable this season, and the defensive injuries sustained in the win at St. Mary’s could be something that Barnsley take advantage of.
Both teams have scored in four of United’s last five domestic cup matches, while both teams have also scored in three of Barnsley’s last four Carabao Cup ties.
The Tykes head to Old Trafford in fine form, despite Saturday’s slip-up at Stevenage, winning three in a row prior to that defeat. United’s quality should prevail here but I wouldn’t be surprised to see goals at both ends.
Odds correct at time of publishing.
Marcus Rashford to score last @ 5/1
The England international opened his account for the season on Saturday, and although I don’t think he’ll start the game, I do think he’ll be involved at some stage, which is why I’ve opted for a last goalscorer bet.
Ten Hag will want to give Rashford some more minutes off the bench after he visibly grew in confidence following his goal in the 3-0 triumph at St. Mary’s, and the United forward has an excellent goalscoring record in this competition, netting in six of his last seven Carabao Cup appearances.
Bringing him on against tired legs in the second half could be the play from Ten Hag on Tuesday, and another goal for the 26-year-old would do his confidence wonders.
Odds correct at time of publishing.
