Charlotte resident Barry Shipp has turned his $200,000 lottery win into a beacon of hope for the homeless through his nonprofit, Pivot Point.
Shipp, known for his dedication to aiding those without shelter, sees his win as a significant boost to his mission.
The lucky moment came when Shipp, who seldom buys lottery tickets, decided to purchase a $5 Pot of Gold ticket from the Kangaroo Express on East WT Harris Boulevard in Charlotte.
To his astonishment, the ticket revealed a series of zeros that amounted to a $200,000 jackpot, a figure he thought was wrong at first.

After claiming his prize at the North Carolina Lottery headquarters, Shipp was left with $143,001 after state and federal taxes were deducted.
“This is just a day in paradise,” he expressed, overwhelmed by his good fortune.
Shipp says he will also use some of his prize money to pay off bills.
His story is not just about luck but also highlights his commitment to making a difference in the lives of those who are homeless.

Pivot Point Transitional Housing is a grassroots initiative based in Charlotte, NC, focused on helping homeless individuals transition to permanent housing.
They adopt a “Housing First” approach, utilizing mini shelters as transitional housing to provide a safe, supportive, and dignified environment.
These mini shelters, designed for single adults, couples, and families with children, serve as a bridge while individuals work towards stable, long-term housing.
Pivot Point’s mission emphasizes building a community that supports its residents in realizing their inherent value, achieving their goals, and transforming their lives. For more details, visit their website at Pivot Point Transitional.
The Pot of Gold game, which debuted in December, offers players a chance to win up to $200,000.
With Shipp’s prize claimed, two more top prizes remain up for grabs.
Players can win instant cash prizes by matching their numbers with the winning numbers or uncovering special symbols like a gold bar for double the prize or a $50 burst symbol for an instant win.
Additionally, non-winning tickets can be entered into the Lucke-Rewards program for a chance to win cash and other prizes, encouraging players to get involved and possibly follow in Shipp’s footsteps of luck and generosity.
Barry Shipp’s story is a reminder of the impact one person can have on their community, especially when good luck and good will meet.
Through Pivot Point, Shipp will continue to build shelters for the homeless, using his windfall to further a cause close to his heart.
