Lucky 15 Tips: The Sun can shine at Southwell

Frustrating fare at Goodwood yesterday, as the ground rather ‘went’ on us late, and not all our selections made it to the start.

Undaunted, we move on to a smashing all-weather card from Southwell on Wednesday, graced by the likes of Billy the Kid, The Doyler, Rossa Ryan and Jim Crowley. The eight-race tip-top Tapeta action kicks in at 14:23, and here are the Lucky 15 tips.

14:53 – Placeholder @ 9/2

Three-year-old Masar filly, trained by George Boughey.

An all-weather challenger from this yard often benefits from the assistance up top of Billy Loughnane, and sure enough The Kid is doing the steering on Wednesday.

He’s ridden her in three of Placeholder’s four runs to date, and she needs to find a little improvement from three weeks ago at Windsor. That was however only outing number two after a 295 day break.

She can strip fitter today and make the most of the weight she’s receiving from the other market principals.

15:23 – Aulis @ 2/1

The fantastic Rossa Ryan is aboard this three-year-old gelded son of the mighty Ulysses, trained by Ralph Beckett.

He’s been the absolute model of consistency, finishing second on his last FOUR starts. He drops into a Class 5 after being chinned last time at HQ in a grade higher (beaten a neck) and Aulis can gain a richly-deserved first success.

15:55 – The Bay Warrior @ 11/2

Experienced veteran Rab Havlin rides for trainer Mark Usher.

The six-year-old gelding is knocking loudly on the door at present and gets a slight one-pound reprieve from the handicapper today. This seems to be an ideal kind of trip and his last win was off this mark of 59 at Kempton in January.

The Bay Warrior represents a bit of value for me in a wide-open contest.

16:28 – Pagan Sun @ 9/2

Sean Woods brings this one from Newmarket after a good run here in a novice stakes race 33 days ago.

The three-year-old colt makes his handicap bow off a mark of 80, and the handicapper has evidently been reasonably taken by what he’s seen so far.

Just the four career starts, the last of which matched his Racing Post rating achieved on debut when trained in Ireland by Paddy Twomey (80). Pagan Sun looks sure to kick on from that and the step up to 1m 6f could be just what he needs.

He’s by an Arc winner (Waldgeist) so there’s bags of class and stamina in the pedigree.
