Lucky 15

It’s Day Three of Goodwood’s Glorious Festival – Thursday, August 1 – and we’ve a brand new, shiny month to enjoy. The coming 31 days includes the likes of Premier League football’s return and York’s Ebor meeting, which I’m lucky enough to be attending, so the word from your humble correspondent at the very least is bring it on. Please.

Two good winners at nice odds yesterday, another controversially demoted from first place, and one non-runner. We’re in form! Here’s our Goodwood Lucky 15 tips – action starts at 13:50.

Lucky 15 Tips Thursday

Goodwood

  • 13:50 – Palace Green @ 6/1
  • 14:25 – The Strikin Viking @ 11/8
  • 15:00 – Sayedaty Sadaty @ 4/1
  • 15:35 – Emily Upjohn @ 2/1

Today’s Horse Races

13:50 – Palace Green @ 6/1

A hot 10f Class 2 handicap, for three-year-olds.

The selection Palace Green is a Sea The Moon gelding trained by Richard Hughes, who rode many winners here during his own illustrious career. Regular pilot Oisin Murphy is once again in the plate.

This one had a luckless passage in the Golden Gates handicap at the Royal meeting and is far better judged on his easy Kempton novice success, and a laudable effort at York in a race closer to the level of this one when probably failing to see out the mile-and-a-half trip.

Dropping to 10f looked appropriate at Ascot but as referred to above he was repeatedly denied racing room and couldn’t make a challenge. I don’t think we’ve seen anything like the ceiling of his ability but we might well get a glimpse of it on Thursday afternoon. Terrific chance.

14:25 – The Strikin Viking @ 11/8

I don’t know about you but I’m already thinking Erling Haaland; but this equine beaut is in fact a nicely-bred two-year-old Inns Of Court colt out of a Shamardal mare. This is the 6f G2 Richmond for juveniles, an historic test first run nearly 150 years ago.

Two spins for Kevin Ryan saw The Strikin Viking take a York novice readily before going close (half a length) in a G2 at the Curragh. He’s recently been rehoused with HQ handler Hamad Al Jehani, and been purchased by Wathnan Racing from Middleham Park.

Run number three now beckons – and for a colt with Gimcrack and Mill Reef entries hopes will be sky-high that James Doyle can bring this one home first on Thursday. Huge opportunity.

15:00 – Sayedaty Sadaty @ 4/1

Aidan saddles a hotpot for this, the G3 Gordon Stakes over 1m 4f, but I’m looking elsewhere with a promising, progressive colt out of a Galileo mare.

Sayedaty Sadaty ran well in City Of Troy’s Betfred Derby (beaten 7.5l), in what was emphatically a career-best display. He’s very recently been acquired by Australian Bloodstock, left previous handler Andrew Balding, and joined Dave Simcock at Newmarket.

Head Waiter Jamie Spencer has been engaged to do the steering, and at such a quirky venue all his experience will be invaluable for a relative youngster making what’s still only career start number nine.

Cracking heat, can’t wait.

15:35 – Emily Upjohn @ 2/1

I caught a TV interview a while back featuring for me the ‘professor’ of UK Racing, John Gosden. He was being asked about his esteemed racemare Emily Upjohn, ahead of the Coronation Cup at Epsom in May.

The gist was ‘she’ll be better next time after getting this one under her belt.’ Prophetic words – she indeed faded a little late in the piece but in her next race ran the brilliant King George runner-up Bluestocking to half-length in the G1 Pretty Polly at the Curragh, having shot clear and looking certain to score.

The gifted five-year-old seemed every bit as good as ever over in Ireland and Team Gosden have selected this huge, handsome prize as her midsummer target. Emily holds Yorkshire Oaks and Arc entries, but for now I’m hoping she’s in the same sparkling form she showed at the Curragh – or even better.

Race of the day for me – no, race of the week.

If you’re playing take care, and as always, have fun.

This is an example of a Lucky 15. If you can improve upon my selections (of course you can), then go for it!

The odds can fluctuate between publishing our pieces and race-time. As a guide, a £0.50p win Lucky 15 on today’s selections, at the prices, and assuming all four won, would return around £320 for your total £7.50 stake.

Fred, ‘The Bonus King,’ invented the ‘Lucky’ series of bets and their bonuses. My colleague Adam has set out all you need to know with this handy guide – take a look by clicking here.
