New Mexico State (1-5, 3-2-1 ATS) looks to stop a five-game losing streak tonight when it hosts Louisiana Tech (2-3; 3-2 ATS) on ESPNU with kickoff slated for 9 p.m. ET.

The Bulldogs are 1-1 in Conference USA play but are coming off a short week after playing Thursday night. It’s the first of three straight Tuesday night games for LA Tech.

New Mexico State was 4-0 in midweek games last year, but has struggled in the first year for coach Tony Sanchez. The Aggies have allowed 104 points in their last two games and have one of the worst defenses in the county.

Trouble in Aggie Land

The big news at New Mexico State this season has come off the field. An investigation by a local newspaper revealed over 150 posts on X (formerly known as Twitter) by offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Tyler Wright that were offensive to many ethnic groups. The posts were made from 2011-2014 before Wright was a coach.

Wright was dismissed from his position by the school on Friday.

The Aggies also lost quarterback Santino Marucci to a concussion in the loss to Jacksonville State. They will start Parker Awad against Louisiana Tech. It will be his fourth start.

LA Tech Coming Around

College football fans will remember current LA Tech coach Sonny Cumbie from his days at Texas Tech. He’s a Mike Leach disciple, and the Bulldogs like to sling it around.

But after the offense struggled early in the season, Cumbie stepped away as play caller and turned the keys over to co-offensive coordinator Nathan Young. The Bulldogs had 551 yards in the win over Middle Tennessee State. They have also used multiple quarterbacks this season, but look for Evan Bullock to get the start tonight against the Aggies.

Defensively, LA Tech has a clear advantage. The Bulldogs are 14 in the nation against the run and only allowing 21.6 points per game.

New Mexico State looks like a team just going through the motions right now. Sanchez is in his first season and has been handed a mess with the Wright situation. You have to wonder how that locker room feels about their leadership right now.

Even more so, the New Mexico State defense is porous, to say the least. They allow 473.5 yards per game, which is 126 in the nation, and are almost dead last against the run.

LA Tech isn’t blessed with a great running game, they have three backs they use interchangeably, with Marquis Crosby averaging 4.8 yards per carry. Wide receiver Tru Edwards leads the Bulldogs with 335 yards receiving and a pair of touchdown catches.

LA Tech’s record is also a bit deceiving. They have three losses by 20 points, including one in OT, and lost by 10 to NC State in a game it led at halftime. The Bulldogs seem primed for another offensive outburst, which is why we like them to cover and the game to go over.
