Los Angeles ChargersMore Coaching Changes than Roster Changes

Except for the Draft, there were relatively few changes to the roster during the offseason. There were seven losses, including wide receivers DeAndre Carter to the Raiders and Michael Bandy to the Broncos, but only two additions. Linebacker Eric Kendricks was brought in from the Vikings after they lost linebackers Troy Reeder to the Vikings and Drue Tranquill to the Chiefs.

Head coach Brandon Staley is back for his third year with the Chargers. Some thought he would have been fired after he put in his starters in the meaningless Week 18 game, and receiver Mike Williams got injured and couldn’t play in the Wild-Card game.

Derrick Ansley is the new defensive coordinator. There’s a new linebackers coach, a new defensive quality control coach, and a new quarterbacks coach. Kellen Moore is the team’s new offensive coordinator.

Injuries Plague the Talented Roster

No one can argue that the Chargers don’t have a talented team. But for some reason, they can’t win a playoff game. They finally got into the playoffs last season, the first time since 2018 and the first time since Justin Herbert became their starting quarterback.

Injuries were a big part of their season in 2022. Herbert sustained a rib injury in Week 2. He didn’t miss a game, but it affected him for months.

Receiver Keenan Allen missed the first nine games with a balky hamstring. Mike Williams missed a month with an ankle problem. Jalen Guyton suffered a torn ACL in Week 3.

Star defensive end Joey Bosa missed most of the season with a groin injury. Cornerback J.C. Jackson ruptured his patellar tendon, which ended his season.

How Will Things Be Different This Season?

The new defensive coordinator, Kellen Moore, will continue to develop Herbert, and he has an extensive receiver group to work with this season, even if there are some injuries.

Herbert didn’t do as well in 2022, but he still put together 4,739 passing yards with a 68.2 completion percentage on 699 attempts. Unfortunately, that only resulted in 25 touchdowns. That’s a drop from his 77 touchdowns total from the previous two years. He only completed seven passes that were 40 yards or more. Perhaps that was due to the rib injury. Hopefully, that’s all clear.

The Chargers drafted receivers Quentin Johnston in the first round and Derius Davis in the fourth. They also have a healthy Keenan Allen and Mike Williams – so far. Tight ends Gerald Everett and Donald Parham quietly continue to add to the passing yards. Everett had a career-high of 58 receptions for 555 yards last year. Herbert has a strong arm and could utilize those wideouts more this season.

The defense was effective against the pass but couldn’t stop the run. OLB Joey Bosa is back after groin surgery, and he’s gained weight, so he can be just as effective against the rush as he is against the pass.

Sports Betting Predictions for the Los Angeles Chargers

Last season, the Chargers were 9-2 as favorites and 1-5 as underdogs. They won most of the games they were supposed to and all but one that they weren’t supposed to. Since there aren’t many changes to the roster, you could infer they’ll do mostly the same this year when managing those bets.

The Chargers have been here before. They look great on paper and have exciting potential, but will they drop the ball again? Will Herbert finally win in the playoffs (if they get in)? This team is expected to get 9.5 wins in 2023, but they have the talent to do much better, so keep your limits in on these bets – just in case.
