- Lions vs Chiefs opens the NFL season on Thursday night in Kansas City
- The over/under is 286.5 on Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes’ passing yardage prop
- A look at various Lions vs Chiefs player props can be found below with predictions
The 2023 NFL season begins with Jared Goff and the Detroit Lions visiting Patrick Mahomes and the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday Night Football at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. With two of the most explosive offenses taking to the field in the season opener, there should be plenty of options in tonight’s Lions vs Chiefs props.
The Chiefs won their second Super Bowl in four years last season. Mahomes led the way by winning his second consecutive NFL MVP award while throwing for a league-best 5,250 yards. Will he go over his passing yards prop tonight?
However, Mahomes could be without his favorite target. Eight-time Pro Bowl tight end Travis Kelce is questionable with a hyperextended knee sustained Tuesday during practice.
Goff was sixth in the league in passing with 4,438 yards a year ago as the Lions just missed making the playoffs for the first time since 2016. We look at his top options in the receiving props tonight here. Read on as we break down how to bet on NFL player props for tonight’s game.

Lions vs Chiefs Prop #1: Amon-Ra St Brown Receiving Yards
Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown emerged as one of the best pass-catching threats in the NFL in his first two seasons. In 2022, he had 106 receptions for 1,161 yards and six touchdowns.
St. Brown is one of three players in NFL history with at least 90 catches in each of his first two seasons. He is also the only player in Lions history to surpass 900 yards receiving in each of his first two seasons.

The Chiefs were just 18th in pass defense in the NFL last season and could struggle in that area this year. The secondary is young and the pass rush could be suspect in Week 1 as it will be without holdout defensive tackle Chris Jones.
St. Brown had four 100-yard receiving games last season and seven games with at least 75 yards.
- Lions vs Chiefs Prop Picks: Amon-Ra St. Brown over 74.5 Receiving Yards -115 (1 unit)
Lions vs Chiefs Prop #2: Patrick Mahomes Passing Yards
As mentioned above, Mahomes led the NFL in passing yardage last season. It marked the second time in his five seasons as an NFL starter that he threw for over 5,000 yards and he has surpassed 4,700 in two other seasons.
There is some concern about the Chiefs passing game with Kelce possibly missing the game and Kansas City lacking a true game-breaking wide receiver. However, the Lions were last among the 32 NFL teams in total defense last year and 30th versus the pass.
Patrick Mahomes in Week 1 as a starting QB:
2022: 360 yards, 5 TDs, 0 INTs
2021: 337 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INTs
2020: 211 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INTs
2019: 378 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INTs
2018: 256 yards, 4 TDs, 0 INTsTotal stats: 1,542 passing yards, 18 TD passes, 0 INTs with a 136.9 passer… pic.twitter.com/HAelkVAJ8k

Mahomes has been nearly flawless in Week 1 during his career, going 5-0 while throwing 18 touchdowns and not being intercepted. The +600 favorite in the NFL MVP odds, Mahomes should rack up a lot of yards again on opening night – with or without Kelce and be good money to go over his passing prop total.
- Lions vs Chiefs Prop Picks: Patrick Mahomes Over 286.5 Passing Yards -115 (1 unit)

Lions vs Chiefs Prop #3: Jerick McKinnon Anytime TD
Veteran running back Jerick McKinnon is a role player in the Chiefs’ offense, and he got 128 touches in the regular season in 2022 with 72 rushes and 56 passes.
However, McKinnon is one of Mahomes’ top red zone targets as evidenced by his nine receiving touchdowns a year ago. McKinnon had TDs in six straight games to end the 2022 regular season and is one away from matching Dwayne Bowe’s franchise record.
Let’s roll with McKinnon to carry over that momentum for tonight’s Lions vs Chiefs picks.
