They’re the cream of the WNBA crop, and they’re on the marquee again when the Las Vegas Aces (7-0, 5-0 away) visit the Connecticut Sun (6-2, 3-1 home).

A rematch of last season’s WNBA Finals, it will be the second consecutive meeting between the two clubs this year, with Vegas staying the lone unbeaten team in the league, outlasting the Sun 90-84 last time out.

That stopped Connecticut’s 3-game win streak, as they suffered their first loss at home.

This battle resumes Thursday (June 8) at 7pm ET from Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT. You can watch the game live on Amazon Prime Video.

Vegas Goes Wire-to-Wire Over Sun

In the much anticipated rematch of the WNBA Finals, the Aces put in some heavy lifting early, eventually hanging on for a 6-point win, winning their fifth straight on the road to open the year.

A’ja Wilson led the way with 23 points, 10 boards and four blocks, while Jackie Young had 22 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals. Kelsey Plum added 17 points and six dimes.

The Aces built a 25-14 lead after the first quarter and the lead grew to as many as 19, with Vegas up 70-53 heading into the fourth quarter. As a team, they shot 50.8% from the field.

While they’re powered by the top-rated offense that scores 93.1 points per game, and a league-bet 48.5% mark from the field, Las Vegas’ defense is also business: they held the Sun to 31% shooting in the first half, including   a 2-for-14 mark from distance.

As a squad, they’re tops in field-goal defense, limiting teams to 39.7% shooting, and they allow just 76.9 points per game, which ranks third.

Suns Catch Fire Too Late

After their shooting struggles for most of the game, Connecticut did start to find the range in the final period.

They used a 17-2 spurt to cut the Aces’ lead to three points, but the top team in the Eastern Conference couldn’t get any closer.

Brionna Jones was a force, finishing with 15 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists, while Alyssa Thomas also packed a double-double with 14 points and 11 boards.

Rebecca Allen came off the bench to lead the Sun in scoring with 22 points and five boards. Allen finished a crisp 6-for-7 from three-point range, including a blistering 5-for-6 mark in the fourth quarter.

For all the flowers the Aces are getting early on this season, one glaring weakness is three-point shooting defense. They currently rank 11th in the 12-team league, with opponents hitting at a crisp 38.2%.

That’s a stark contrast to the Sun, who hold the opposition to a 29% figure from distance, which leads the WNBA. Vegas was just 4-for-15 from beyond the arc (26.7%), while Connecticut went 10-for-26 (38.5%).

Las Vegas also leads the league in points in the paint at 41.1 per contest, and they rung up 48 in the last game, a +14 advantage in that category.

They also like to get out and run, averaging 15.7 fast break points (2nd), but the Sun lead the WNBA in fast break points against, giving up just 6.1.

Aces vs Sun Head-to-Head Stats

Las Vegas Aces
VS
Connecticut Sun
93.1 (1st) Points Per Game 79.6 (9th)
48.5% (1st) Field Goal Percentage 41.0% (8th)
34.3% (8th) Three-Point Percentage 32.5% (10th)

+16.3 (1st) +/- +1.8 (4th)

After crushing the competition by an average of 22.3 points in their first four wins, Vegas has won three straight in single digits by an average of just five points.

Assuming Connecticut comes out early with more bounce on their home floor than they did previously, this one has a chance to be close down the stretch, and those points they are getting should come in handy.

  • The Pick: Sun +5 (-110)
