The series moves to San Diego for Game 3 and the Padres are able to trot out burgeoning ace Michael King as they try to push the Dodgers to the brink of elimination. After LA took Game 1 by a 7-5 score, Fernando Tatis Jr led the charge for the Padres on Sunday, hitting two of the Friars’ six long balls.

The win improved San Diego’s World Series odds to +490 on average while the long-favored Dodgers faded to +417.

LAD vs SD Game 3 Pitchers: Buehler vs King

Michael King had the performance of the postseason so far in Game 1 of San Diego’s Wild Card series with the Braves. King pitched seven shutout innings, allowing just five hits and no walks with 12 strikeouts in a 4-0 win. It was the ninth straight start that King allowed two or fewer earned runs.

King had a mixed bag of results in four starts against the Dodgers in the regular season. He was roughed up in the first two (ten hits, five walks, and seven earned runs in just 8.1 innings) but was lights-out in the second two (five hits, five walks, zero earned runs in 12.0 innings with 14 Ks).

The current Dodger lineup has 98 total ABs against King with a .235 average and .779 OPS. Shohei Ohtani is has roughed him up the most, going 6-for-14 with three home runs and a 1.681 OPS.

Walker Buehler has excellent career numbers against the Padres hitters. In 157 ABs, he’s limited them to a .204 average and .594 OPS. Tatis Jr has had the most-success against Buehler, with a .310 average and 1.034 OPS (including three homers) in 29 at-bats.

Of course, the vast majority of Buehler’s history against the Padres hitters comes from previous years. The 2024 season has been an almost unmitigated disaster for the 30-year-old righty, who was limited to just 75.2 innings largely due to a hip injury. He did manage to lower his ERA from 5.95 to 5.38 over his final three starts.

Dodgers vs Padres Prediction for Game 3

As scary as the Dodger lineup is – including Ohtani’s brilliant history against King – I don’t see much value betting on Buehler in a matchup against the San Diego ace at the moment. Buehler had a decent start against the Padres on Sep. 26 (the last time he was on the mound), allowing just one run on five hits and a walk over 5.0 innings. That said, he managed just one strikeout, which continued a concerning trend that saw him post a career-low 18.6% K-rate in 2024.
