Japan and Spain will battle it out on Monday morning for top spot in Group C as they both take their unbeaten records into matchday three. The kick-off for this fixture is scheduled for 3 AM ET at Wellington Regional Stadium in New Zealand.
The Japanese are perfect thus far with dominant wins over Zambia and Costa Rica. The same can be said for the Spaniards. The two sides have yet to concede in the tournament which is rather impressive, but it’s not the most difficult pod, either.

Japan vs Spain Preview
Japan is currently the No. 11 ranked country in the world and has enjoyed its fair share of success on the World Cup stage, winning the 2011 edition by beating the United States in penalties before ultimately making it to the showpiece four years later, although the USWNT got revenge.
As for 2019, the Japanese didn’t live up to expectations, exiting at the Round of 16 stage in a 2-1 defeat to the Netherlands, who progressed to the final themselves. With no shortage of experience on the big stage, Japan will be confident another deep run is possible in the current competition.
Futoshi Ikeda’s group has certainly shown well thus far. First, they hammered debutants Zambia 5-0 with Hinata Miyazawa scoring a brace. Then in their most recent clash with Costa Rica, the Japanese bagged two early goals, giving them another three points and already securing their spot in the knockouts.
Although Japan doesn’t technically have to win this game, it will be a very good test against a difficult opponent who they’ve yet to beat. Their recent form is certainly a good sign too, winning five of the previous six outings.
Even though Alexia Putellas has barely played thus far for Spain, Jorge Vilda’s side hasn’t missed a beat. The Red One is firing on all cylinders, netting eight times, and keeping a pair of clean sheets.
Spain buried Costa Rica 3-0 before putting five past the Zambians last Wednesday. All-time leading scorer Jennifer Hermoso bagged a double while Alba Redondo also hit the back of the net twice. The Spaniards sit top of Group C thanks to a slightly better goal difference than Japan.
The No. 6 ranked nation according to FIFA doesn’t have a lot of success to show for in the World Cup, but the talent pool is only growing. Spain failed to get past the group stages in 2015 before reaching the Round of 16 in 2019.
On that trajectory, a spot in the quarterfinals looks to be possible. Without a doubt, this is one of the most special groups La Roja has ever had. Hopefully, that can push them to greatness.
