A Sweet Draw Quarter for Sinner

From the start, with No. 4 seed Casper Ruud as his projected quarterfinal opponent, Jannik Sinner was the favorite to get to the final four even with his abject lack of experience on grass.

Sinner, now 21, lost in the first round of qualifying at Wimbledon in 2019, when he was 17. He came back after the 2020 edition was cancelled and lost in the first round in 2021 to Marton Fucsovics of Hungary, who was ranked No. 48 to his No. 23.

But a year ago, ranked No. 13, he made the quarterfinals and defeated Stan Wawrinka, big-serving John Isner, and the even-younger Carlos Alcaraz en route.

This year, he goes one step further – at least. But while that’s an impressive run, Sinner has yet to face a seed through his first five matches. A number of those opponents are better on the clay, as well; but Sinner has lost just two sets on his way to the rematch with Djokovic.

Djokovic Rarely in Trouble

Djokovic, who has won the last four Wimbledons and was a massive favorite in the Wimbledon odds coming in, has had a much more regulation run.

He faced a tough task in No. 17 seed Hubert Hurkacz in the round of 16, and the hard-hitting Russian Andrey Rublev (the No. 7 seed) in the quarterfinals.

Djokovic dropped one set to each of them, with the clash against Hurkacz by far his biggest challenge of the tournament.

His biggest issue has been … people watching him practice.

Meetings between the two have been surprisingly rare – just twice have they played.

The last time was in the Wimbledon quarterfinals last year, with Sinner up two sets to love before falling in five.

Sinner vs Djokovic Match History

Year Tournament Surface Score Winner
2022 Wimbledon (QF) Grass 5-7, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 Djokovic
2021 Monte Carlo Masters (R32) Outdoor Clay 6-4, 6-2 Djokovic

Djokovic hasn’t lost at Wimbledon since 2017, when he retired early. in the second set of a quarterfinal match against the now-retired Tomas Berdych, during the period when he was coming back from elbow surgery.

He has earned nearly $22 million at Wimbledon alone in his career. And with his 91-10 record, has lost more Wimbledon matches than Sinner had ever even played coming into this year’s event.

Sinner vs Djokovic Prediction

Sinner will have learned from last year’s match, when he may have felt pretty confident about his chances after being up two sets to none. He has more experience now, and making that first run a year ago has direct consequences on his ability to repeat that – and more – in 2023.

But Djokovic will also have picked up some intel. And Sinner’s biggest challenge will be to get to two sets to love up.

That’s unlikely to happen. He has won a lot of matches this fortnight, but none of them against players even close to the calibre of the Serb, who has looked as good as ever in getting to the final four.

That said, Djokovic’s odds of winning were at -630 Wednesday night, and had dropped to -465 by Thursday morning. So Sinner is getting some backing for the upset in the Sinner vs Djokovic odds.

Can Sinner take a set in our Wimbledon predictions? Perhaps one. But although anything is possible, this doesn’t look to be the year when the man who hasn’t lost at the All-England Club in six years is knocked off his perch.
