Hybrid SUV comparison – Bentley Bentayga versus Range Rover Sport

Hybrid SUV comparison – Bentley Bentayga versus Range Rover Sport

I can understand the value of car comparisons being used as a tool when purchasing a new car, and over the years I’ve been fortunate to have been on various judging panels for the likes of “Car of the Year’ and ‘Performance Car of the Year’ awards etc. So, I know how thorough most journalists are when they compare one car against another and how much of a ‘mind fizz’ it can be to say that one car is better than another.

For example, I’m not convinced that there are bad new cars on the market now.  There are many different cars available, serving different purposes, at different price ranges, from different countries, with different warranty obligations and running costs etc, and all are being thrown in our faces with expensive advertising campaign.

I’ve often wondered when people look at vehicle comparisons … are they approaching them with an open mind or simply needing justification that the car they really want is the right one, i.e., in the old days would a true-blue Ford fan really change to Holden because of a vehicle comparison?

Generally, most car comparisons today involve vehicles that have very narrow criteria such as, four door sedans under $30,000, cab chassis utes, small electric vehicles, serious four-wheel drives under $100,000 and so it goes on.

So, I was intrigued to see how Mat Watson from British motoring site Carwow handled a recent comparison between two well-known British manufacturers, with the criteria being plug in hybrid SUVs.

The interesting part of this comparo is that the two newly released vehicles are the Range Rover Sport Plug-in Hybrid valued at 75,000 English Pounds against the Bentley Bentayga Plug-in Hybrid at double the price, 155,000 Pounds.

To get this into perspective re the Australian market, both cars are currently available here, although with varying wait times, and the rough comparative prices are the Range Rover Sport Hybrid is $200,000 plus on roads, and the Bentley Bentayga Hybrid is around $450,000 plus on roads, so not really a level playing field!

The big question is would a person who could afford a Bentley Bentayga ever consider a Range Rover after seeing this review.
