Houston Texans Betting Preview

The Houston Texans finished in last place in the AFC South in the 2022 NFL season. This year, expectations for them are low once again, as they look to figure things out at the quarterback position. But they did draft a quarterback in this most recent NFL Draft, and at least will attempt to build him into a suitable long-term solution. Here, we break down the upcoming season for the Texans and make our pick for them in the season win total market for 2023.

Houston Texans Picks, Predictions & Betting News

Offseason Transactions

Key Additions: Dalton Schultz, Robert Woods, C.J. Stroud, Will Anderson

Key Departures: Brandin Cooks, Jonathan Owens

Overall, the offseason for the Texans would have to be considered a success. They drafted a high-level quarterback prospect in C.J. Stroud, and got him Dalton Schultz and Robert Woods to throw to. Adding Will Anderson at linebacker in the draft is also a huge win for Houston, while losing Brandin Cooks doesn’t hurt much given how often he was injured with the Texans. While there is very little reason to believe that these positives will turn into a winning team in the long run, this represents some significant progress.

Houston Texans Offensive Stats

2022 (Rank) 2021 (Rank)
Yards Per Play 4.7 (32nd) 4.7 (T-30th)
Yards Per Rush Attempt 3.7 (T-30th) 3.4 (32nd)
Yards Per Pass Attempt 6.3 (30th) 6.6 (T-25th)
Points Per Game 17.0 (T-30th) 16.5 (30th)
Turnovers 28 (31st) 22 (T-13th)

Offensively, the Houston Texans performed about how you would expect a team that drafted a quarterback in the top-three this past year to perform. They were in the bottom-three in all of the major offensive statistical categories listed above. The Texans may be down there again this season, as there are likely to be some growing pains while attempting to develop and integrate Stroud into their system this season.

Houston Texans Defensive Stats

2022 (Rank) 2021 (Rank)
Yards Per Play Allowed 5.7 (T-24th) 5.9 (T-29th)
Yards Per Rush Attempt Allowed 5.1 (29th) 4.6 (T-26th)
Yards Per Pass Attempt Allowed 6.8 (T-22nd) 7.5 (T-29th)
Points Per Game Allowed 24.7 (27th) 26.6 (27th)
Takeaways 27 (T-4th) 25 (T-10th)

Houston was not impressive on defense last season either. But they were good at one thing: taking the ball away from their opponents on defense. That is something that the Texans have been good at each of the last two seasons, but the problem for Houston is their inability to take advantage of those sudden change situations. It will be interesting to see if that changes in 2023.

Positives & Negatives

The Houston Texans’ biggest positive going into 2023 might not be anything on the field, but rather the fact that they simply have something to look forward to this season. The hope associated with drafting a new quarterback and hoping he turns into something is better than the bleak nature of the last two seasons for this franchise. Combine that with the fact that Will Anderson could turn this defense into something respectable, and Houston’s biggest positive is certainly the optimism they can carry into this year.

However, optimism can only get a team so far. The fact that the Texans have such a bleak running game, and the fact that it will take them a long time to get Stroud up and running as a pro quarterback, and all the optimism in the world might not be enough to make this season a successful one.

2023 Houston Texans Win Total Prediction: Under 6.5 Wins

For now, we like the under on the season win total for the Houston Texans. They appear to have acquired some building blocks for their future, but that should not be enough to increase last year’s win total by four games or more. By next season six or seven wins should be a more realistic target for Houston, but not this season.
