Horse Racing Tips: Grey to take the Highway to victory
Although it is a rather quiet Sunday with just two meetings taking place across the afternoon in Britain, both Flat and jumps fans will be catered for. First off is Uttoxeter before they go at Pontefract.
Among our Sunday fancies is one for trainer Tim Easterby who farms the 1m2f handicap at Pontefract, having won the contest six times since 2013.
Horse Racing Tips – Sunday, July 28
14:42 Pontefract – Zous Juice @ 5/1
We will be focusing on a good Pontefract card today and are hopeful Michael & David Easterby’s ZOUS JUICE can get punters off to the perfect start in the mile handicap with Joanna Mason aboard.
The son of Zoustar hasn’t been seen to best effect in a trio of novice races over trips ranging from 7f to 1m. He was slowly away on his debut and generally held up otherwise, shaping as if connections might be happy to wait for handicaps.
An opening mark of 65 is very exploitable, and although he doesn’t have the best of draws in stall seven it shouldn’t be a hindrance as he likes to come from off the pace anyway. If there’s enough early speed on here, and it looks likely there will be, he should be rattling home.
15:12 Pontefract – Hi Royal @ 11/2
The Listed Pomfret Stakes over a mile should be a brilliant race and it’s a tricky one to figure out with runners dropping in class taking on some improving types. Nonetheless, it looks like a great opportunity for Kevin Ryan’s HI ROYAL to get back to winning ways.
A four-year-old son of Kodiac, he has been highly tried at the top table and looked out of his depth in a pair of Group 1s recently when fifth in the Lockinge Stakes and well beaten in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot.
However, he was beaten only a length into third in the Group 3 Earl Of Sefton Stakes at Newmarket on his return, and it must not be forgotten that he finished a brilliant second in the 2,000 Guineas behind Chaldean last year.
Dipping his toes into this sort of grade now, this will be his easiest assignment for some time and he really should go close.
3.42 Pontefract – Highwaygrey @ 4/1
Trainer Tim Easterby loves to farm his local Yorkshire tracks and he tends to target this mile handicap in particular, winning the race six times since 2013 including four of the last five.
His representative this year is HIGHWAYGREY, who won the race four years ago. He is getting on in years but the four-time course and distance winner was supported in the betting at Ayr last time and ran a good race in fifth despite missing the break.
He loves a sound surface so conditions will be in his favour, and with the perfect draw by the rail in stall one, he can take advantage of a plummeting handicap mark.
