Commodores Boast Balanced Attack

The Vanderbilt Commodores enter the 2023 college football season following a 5-7 campaign in the SEC last season, including a 3-1 record in non-conference play. One of those non-con games came against Hawaii, in which the Commodores cruised to a 63-10 victory.

Vanderbilt boasts a balanced offensive attack, averaging 194.6 passing yards and 159.9 rushing yards per game last season. Unfortunately, Vandy lost their top running back, Ray Davis, a 1,000-yard rusher, to Kentucky in the transfer portal.

After finishing last season as the starting quarterback, AJ Swann will again be under center for the Commodores against Hawaii. He threw for 1,274 yards with 10 touchdowns and two interceptions during the 2022 campaign.

Defensively, the Commodores allowed 36.0 points per game last season, with 298.3 passing yards and 170.8 rushing yards per game. Vanderbilt had a 5-7-0 against the spread (ATS) record in 2022, including an unimpressive 1-5 ATS mark at home.

Rainbow Warriors Rely on Passing Game

The Hawaii Rainbow Warriors enter college football week 0 following a 3-10 campaign in the Mountain West conference last season. Although they had a losing record, Timmy Chang’s team went 4-2 ATS as a road underdog.

The strength of Hawaii’s offense is its passing game, led by returning quarterback Brayden Schager, who threw for 2,348 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions last season. Hawaii averaged 19.8 points per game, with 216.8 passing yards and 137.2 rushing yards per contest.

Running back Tylan Hines, who rushed for 634 yards and 2 scores as a freshman, will also play a significant role for Hawaii in the 2023 season. The Rainbow Warriors have reportedly returned to the run-and-shoot offense under Chang, with the team hoping Hines and Schager can form a lethal tandem.

Defensively, the Rainbow Warriors allowed 36.0 points per game in 2022, with 298.3 passing yards and 170.8 rushing yards per game. Hawaii’s defensive issues were on full display in the 2022 meeting vs Vanderbilt, as they were outscored 45-0 in the second half.

Hawaii vs Vanderbilt Prediction

This upcoming college football week 0 showdown is only the second meeting between the two teams, with Vanderbilt winning the previous one decisively. The Commodores were only favored by eight points in that game, and they went on to win in blowout fashion.

The Commodores should secure another victory this time around, but the spread is high for a team with defensive issues. In Vanderbilt’s season finale against Tennessee last season, they were gashed for 362 yards on the ground by the Volunteers.

Our best bet for the Vanderbilt vs Hawaii matchup is to take the “over” on the Commodores team total. The Rainbow Warriors have had no answer for pass-heavy quarterbacks and won’t be able to slow this experienced SEC offense. The Commodores scored at least 35 points in nine of their 12 games in 2022.

  • Pick: Vanderbilt Team Total Over 36.5 Points (-120)
