The DP World Tour continues this week with the Open de Espana at Club de Campa Villa de Madrid, Madrid, Spain.
The 144 field with the top 65 including ties making the cut will all be competing for a share of the $3.25M prize purse with the winner collecting the Open de Espana title & a winning cheque for $541,750.
Jon Rahm returns to his homeland looking to not only defend his crown but win this event for the fourth time. His winning scorecard from last year read 259, -25.
Club de Campo Villa de Madrid will be playing 7,112 yards this week, it’s a par 71 Parkland layout where birdies or better will be the order of play with so many available almost everywhere you look.
The weather is forecast to be pleasant, sunny & warm for the most part with the threat of some showers over the weekend. Breezes will peak at around 10mph.
This event will be screened on Sky Sports Golf with live coverage starting at 1 p.m. on Thursday afternoon.
So let’s get on with this week’s betting tips for the Open de Espana.
Open de Espana Betting Tips
Jon Rahm 9/4 Coral
For my first & main selection in Madrid just like last year, it’s Jon Rahm 9/4 Coral. I tipped Jon Rahm at the exact same price to win this last year & the talented Spaniard from Barrika duly obliged on that occasion.
Not only did I tip Rahm last year, but I also made him my first-ever NAP to win an outright tournament. Although the odds were skinny then just like this year, a wins a win in my book & why go hunting elsewhere when the prize is right in front of you?
The thing is, as mentioned his price is still the same this year & that’s after winning this for the third time in five years. If you watched the Jon Rahm show here last year & previous years then you’ll know what I mean when I say it could be catch me if you can all over again.
Last year when winning this Rambo was the World No.6, now he’s ranked 3rd. What has he won this year? Oh, only The Masters, The Genesis Invitational, and the American Express not to mention The Ryder Cup just the other weekend. Now without being disrespectful, you just need to take a look down this field as will Rahm & he won’t be looking over his shoulder for Scheffler or Rory or Hovland or Schauffele or Cantlay, you get the picture.
Jon Rahm stormed to victory here last year with six shots to spare & in 2019 he won with five shots to play about with over the chasing pack. Honestly, I could go on & on with stats & figures for Jon Rahm not too mention over a dozen titles including majors, this is men against-boys stuff & if Jon Rahm decides to show up & defend his title in style once again then good luck to the rest.
Adrian Otaegui 35/1 EW Boylesports 1-8 places
For my NB pick if anyone can get the better of Jon Rahm then it could be fellow countryman Adrian Otaegui 50/1 EW LiveScorebet or 35/1 EW Boylesports 1-8 places. The 30-year-old Spaniard has already won four times on the DP World Tour & if it’s places only we are chasing then this looks like the perfect opportunity.
His figures for Sand Saves, Stroke Average and putts per GIR are all inside the Top 20 on the DPWT. Last time out at the Open de France Otaegui finished inside the Top 20 in 16th place & went even better at the ISPS Handa World Invitational where he was up there challenging eventually finishing in 4th place.
The Spaniard’s best effort in 2023 was runner-up at the KLM Open & with the Spanish Armada out in full fleet this week then I’d expect a whole host of them sailing amongst the leaders this weekend in Madrid. Adrian Otaegui could be one of them.
Adri Arnaus 70/1 Betfred 1-5 places
For this week’s final betting tip it’s another home win for the Spanish, Adri Arnaus 70/1 Betfred 1-5 places or 60/1 EW Boylesports 1-8 places.
T14th just last weekend at the washout Alfred Dunhill Links Championship played over 54 holes means the 28-year-old from Barcelona could be worth a small investment. He won the Catalunya Championship on home soil in 2022 & finished runner-up at this event around this venue in 2021 .
Adri Arnaus also finished 4th around here in 2019 & usually always plays well in his homeland. Runner-up earlier in the year at the SDC Championship & T6th at the Ras Al Khaimah Championship are his best efforts this year but a return home could spur him on even more & the W will be in his thoughts. Adri Arnaus is one of the hottest putters in this field & also strikes the ball well Off the Tee.
If combining both these skills well over the next few days then maybe just maybe Jon Rahm may have a challenger.
