This Week: National Ghost Hunting Day

September 26, 2024.

Guess what September 28 is? Come a little closer. Just a bit closer, now. Don’t be scared… BOO! It’s National Ghost Hunting Day. AAAHHH!!!

A big white ghost is smiling in the center of a blue and purple wavy backdrop.

On the last Saturday of every September, ghost lovers across the U.S. lurk through creepy, lair-like locations with EMF meters and spirit boxes, hoping to catch the paranormal off guard and secure spine-chilling footage as proof.

If you, too, are curious about things that go bump in the night, we have some hauntingly fun suggestions for enjoying a day of (welcomed) fright.

For starters, many paranormal investigation groups in the U.S. stream their eerie explorations of haunted places for public viewing. You can catch them on YouTube investigating infamous spots like old Sanatoriums, State Penitentiaries, and abandoned houses, safely snuggled at home in your PJs.

If you’re feeling adventurous and want to explore the paranormal closer to home, dive into local ghost legends. Nearly every town in the U.S. has a spooky tale or two, and, with dedicated apps, you can search for spectral activity in your own backyard.

Whether it’s your local cemetery or that old, abandoned house down the road, you might discover ghostly encounters lurking right under your nose. That is… if you’re brave enough to check…

Lastly, round out your day with a terrifyingly good ghost-themed movie marathon. Platforms like Netflix and Hulu are packed with supernatural thrillers this time of year. Settle in with some popcorn and flicks like “The Haunting of Hill House” or “The Conjuring” to keep your adrenaline racing until the grand phantom finale of Halloween.

This Week: Oktoberfest is Tapping Into Your Calendar This Saturday

September 18, 2024.

Oktoberfest is Tapping Into Your Calendar This Saturday

Oktoberfest is a celebration steeped in over 200 years of Bavarian tradition. Originating in Munich in 1810 to honor the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese, the festival has since become a global phenomenon of booze, buddies, and barrels of laughs – yes, even here in the U.S.!

The official festivities run from September 21 to October 6 in Munich, but you’ll find American cities pouring their own Oktoberfest cheer, complete with stein-holding contests, lively polka music, and authentic German fare.

A smiling man is holding two frothy beers in either hand with festive banners hung above him and traditional German houses poking on either side.

Cincinnati’s massive Zinzinnati fest, hailed as “America’s largest Oktoberfest,” draws over 700,000 revelers to guzzle German-style brews, starting early on September 19.

Down in the Bavarian-inspired village of Helen, Georgia, steins are raised from September 26 to October 27, complete with oompah bands and keg taps.

For a breath of fresh mountain air, Denver’s Oktoberfest features keg bowling and wiener dog races, while the Trapp Family Lodge in Vermont offers scenic stein-hoisting amidst vibrant fall foliage.

If the real-life festivals are out of reach, get your Märzen, Festbier, and Weissbier fix at home and join a virtual walkthrough of Munich’s legendary Oktoberfest. Your 1.5-hour tour includes a history of the festival, a peak into the brewing traditions, and a guided stroll through the festival grounds and beer tents.

Or, better yet, shout “Zum Wohl!” and throw a little Oktober-festival of your own. Order traditional lederhosen and dirndl, stock the cooler with German brews, fire up the grill with a juicy bratwurst, and invite your friends over to sip, snack, and celebrate like it’s Munich. Prost!

TOP TIP: If you’d rather join the festivities from home, check out our list of the best Oktoberfest slots – the perfect way to enjoy the party without stepping outside.

This Week: Scream for the Return of Beetlejuice in Theaters Now

September 11, 2024.

Just in time for spooky season, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is creeping into theaters like a mischievous poltergeist, scaring up $110 million in its opening weekend in the U.S. This long-awaited sequel is haunting the box office as the third-biggest debut of 2024 and the second-best September release ever, just lurking behind It, from 2017.

This nostalgic sequel is making a ghoulish mark internationally, too, raking in $145.4 million worldwide and snagging the No. 1 spot in 40 international markets, including the UK, Mexico, and Australia. With such a strong start, it’s already conjuring up bigger numbers than the 1988 Beetlejuice, which scared up just $8 million in its opening weekend.

The character Beetlejuice is emerging from a green pumpkin with his arms raised and it’s all on a blue background.

Fans of Tim Burton’s original can shout “Beetlejuice!” three times with joy as Michael Keaton crawls back into his striped suit, with Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara creep across the screen once again. Fresh off her eerily perfect roles in Wednesday and Scream, Jenna Ortega injects new life (or afterlife?) into the film, drawing a younger crowd with her 38 million-strong social media following.

With Tim Burton’s signature macabre style, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is getting a spook-tacular twist, and critics are calling it a “hysterical return to form.” The film follows the Deetz family as they return to Winter River, where Lydia’s daughter, Astrid (played by Jenna Ortega), accidentally opens a portal to the afterlife. This mistake unleashes Beetlejuice (Keaton) back into the real world, where he summons chaos and delivers his trademark dark humor.

If you haven’t hopped on the sandworm yet, now’s the time to snag your ticket to the afterlife for the ghostly hit of the season.

This Week: Labor Day Weekend Fun Time

August 30, 2024.

Labor Day has been a staple of American culture since the late 1800s. What started as a celebration rooted in labor union movements has grown into a day for you to kick back, relax, and enjoy a well-deserved break. With that in mind, here are some ways to make the most of your blessed long weekend.

A smiling man with a beard and a blue apron stands over a grill with smoking meat, all on a blue background.

Grilling is hot on the plates of tradition on Labor Day weekend. If you’re a seasoned pitmaster, impress your guests with a BBQ smoked brisket. Otherwise, slap on a few simple patties and focus on socializing.

For sports fans, Labor Day weekend marks the official kickoff of NCAA football, where you can root for your alma mater from the sidelines of your couch. Week Zero already got the ball rolling on August 24, but most games take the field on Saturday, August 31. You can huddle up with the full schedule on the NCAA’s official website.

Next up, what better way to toast workers’ rights than by splurging a little of that hard-earned cash? Labor Day is a prime holiday to hit the streets, or, let’s be real – the browser – for some retail therapy. Retailers are slashing prices on just about everything, including jewelry, electronics, home goods, and more.

As Labor Day marks the end of summer, it’s the perfect chance for one last adventure before the season ends. Skyscanner.com offers fantastic last-minute deals on flights and hotels worldwide—just enter your starting point and dates to see your options. Alternatively, you might find a local Labor Day parade celebrating all the festivities. Check your town’s website or social media for details on when and where to join the fun.
