Glorious Goodwood Day 4 Tips: 13/2 shot to star in King George

Goodwood Racecourse

Friday is the penultimate day of Glorious Goodwood and it’s another classy offering – running from 13:50-17:20 – on the menu.

The highlight is the King George Stakes, which features in my Glorious Goodwood Day 4 tips.

  • 15:35 – Starlust @ 13/2
  • 17:20 – Sun God e/w @ 17/2

15:00 – New Image e/w @ 15/2

The first of Today’s Horse Races at Goodwood that grabbed my attention is the Golden Mile – a Heritage Handicap over a mile.

Twenty runners go to post and it’s an Extra Place Race, with Betfred are paying 5 places instead of 4 at 1/5 the odds for all each-way bets, so my first bit of advice is to play it each-way – whoever you fancy.

It’ll be David O’Meara’s NEW IMAGE getting my support.

The four-year-old son of Frankel has been super consistent since joining O’Meara from Irish trainer Ger Lyons last summer, winning three and placing in as many of the seven races he’s contested in that time.

His most recent effort was just six days ago in a similar big-field handicap at Ascot and he finished a neck second – a clear career-best.

He now steps up to a mile for the first time, which looks sure to suit, and competes off an unchanged mark of 89. If coping with the rapid turnaround, his chance is undeniable.

15:35 – Starlust @ 13/2

Just over half an hour later is the big race of the afternoon – the King George Qatar Stakes. A Group 2 for horses aged three and above over the minimum trip of five furlongs.

In my book, the value lies with STARLUST for Ralph Beckett.

I was close to backing him for the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot in June, but I was ultimately put off by his record over six furlongs. His record over five, however? It reads 311, with that one defeat being to the reopposing Big Evs in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint last November. He wasn’t beaten far either.

Back over his preferred distance following an authoritative Listed success at York last month, I see no reason why the selection should be three times the price of the aforementioned Big Evs. He’s the bet for me.

17:20 – Sun God e/w @ 17/2

Lastly, I like the look of Hughie Morrison’s SUN GOD in this three-year-old handicap over 1m3f that concludes Day 4.

The son of Fastnet Rock was a modest two-year-old in the main, but on his final run of the season he easily landed a Lingfield handicap off a mark of 69 and he’s not looked back since.

On his first run at three he finished a narrow second to a highly-rated Paul & Oliver Cole inmate and last time out he was a solid fourth, beaten just over two lengths, in an even better race off a mark of 82 following a gelding operation.

That outing ought to have put him spot on for Friday’s contest and a further rise of just one pound is more than manageable.

This is an Extra Place Race, so Betfred are paying 4 places instead of 3 at 1/5 the odds for all each-way bets.
