Glorious Goodwood Day 1 Tips: 7/1 NAP tops Tuesday’s selections
The sun has appeared in time for Goodwood’s five-day festival, which gets underway on Tuesday with a bumper eight-race card running from 13:50-17:55.
I’ve come up with a handful of Glorious Goodwood Day 1 tips – including one for trainer Richard Hannon who excels at this meeting.
Glorious Goodwood Day 1 Tips
15:00 – Noble Dynasty @ 3/1
The first of Today’s Horse Races at Glorious Goodwood that interests me from a betting standpoint is the Lennox Stakes – a Group 2 over seven furlongs for horses aged three and above.
Kinross has won this twice and it would be no surprise were he to land the hat-trick, but the seven-year-old is winless in four starts and his latest effort just 17 days ago was his worst for a long time.
The in-form Ed Walker saddles the lightly-raced English Oak who’s improving rapidly, bolting up in the Buckingham Palace Stakes handicap at Royal Ascot last month off a mark of 99.
However, at time of publication he’s the same price as Charlie Appleby’s NOBLE DYNASTY, who gave English Oak a stone and a beating at Newmarket in May.
Godolphin’s Dubawi colt, who won a Group 3 at Newmarket rather snugly the last day, has won seven of his 13 starts and looks set for another big run.
16:10 – Equilateral e/w @ 12/1
Just over an hour later is a 0-105 handicap over the minimum trip of five furlongs. Thirteen go to post and it’s Charles Hills’ veteran EQUILATERAL who gets my vote.
After three poor performances in Meydan (twice) and Salisbury over the winter and into spring, it looked as if the superstar sprinter was gone at the game. However, his most recent effort back on these shores at Sandown earlier this month was a total return to form that suggested this mark of 104 in these big-field handicaps he loves so much could be very fair.
In what doesn’t look a particularly strong renewal, he has good each-way claims.
This is an Extra Place Race, so Betfred are paying 4 places instead of 3 at 1/5 the odds for all each-way bets.
17:20 – Circe @ 7/1
Glorious Goodwood and Richard Hannon go hand in hand and if he hasn’t done so already, I fancy he enters the winners’ enclosure on Day 1 courtesy of CIRCE in the penultimate contest.
The three-year-old Kodiac filly showed ability among inconsistency as a two-year-old and in the early stages of this season, but her victory in a Newbury handicap off a mark of 83 just 10 days ago following a decent break was a clear career-best that suggested she might just be starting to come to hand.
A four-pound rise looks very fair, the excellent Hollie Doyle keeps the ride and conditions suit. She rates the NAP.
Betfred are offering your stake back (up to £10) as a free bet if your selection for this race finishes 2nd.
17:55 – Executive Decision @ 13/2
Finally, I’m backing Jamie Osborne’s EXECUTIVE DECISION to repeat last year’s triumph in this 0-95 fillies’ handicap over six furlongs.
The four-year-old won it off a mark of 84 and immediately followed up at Chester off six pounds higher, before struggling for the rest of the season in the mid 90s.
The handicapper has been generous since. The selection made an adequate return this term off 91 and was dropped a further pound, before a solid run on Betfred Derby day at Epsom which earned further relief.
Then, off a mark of 89, she ran another fine race at Ascot and now comes here off 87, just three pounds higher than last year.
There’s every chance she’s been trained for this and ought to be very competitive if so.
