The Daniel Jones Era Is Nearing the End

The lookahead line for this matchup was Steelers +4, but last week’s results by both teams heavily inspired the line move. Pittsburgh looked rejuvenated with Russell Wilson, and a lock to exceed their projection in the NFL win total odds. New York meanwhile, turned in one of the most pathetic performances of the season.

The Giants were trampled by the rival Eagles 28-3. They produced only 119 yards, while allowing 22 pressures and eight sacks on 37 true drop backs. They couldn’t overcome the loss of stud left tackle Andrew Thomas, and Daniel Jones was ultimately benched after throwing for only 99 yards.

Jones has been given the vote of confidence this week by coach Brian Daboll, but it certainly looks like his days as a starter are numbered. New York can get out of his contract comfortably after this season, and there were already talks of drafting his replacement this past offseason.

Truth be told, Jones isn’t worthy of a starting position. He’s led the team to an average of 14.5 points per game, the second lowest total in the league. Pro Football Focus grades hims 32nd among quarterbacks this season, while the Giants are losing 0.04 expected points every time Jones drops back to pass.

Life won’t get any easier tonight, as Pittsburgh’s defense is among the league’s best. Led by T.J. Watt, the Steelers are PFF’s highest graded pass rush unit. They’re yielding only 14.4 points and less than 300 yards per game.

A Russell Wilson Renaissance

On the other side of the ball, Russell Wilson is back in our lives. Mr. Unlimited shook off a slow start in his Pittsburgh debut, ultimately leading them to a season-high 37 points versus the Jets. Wilson accounted for four touchdowns, throwing three and sneaking one in.

He showed great chemistry with George Pickens, and the threat of a passing attack opened up big holes for Najee Harris. The former Alabama product rushed for 102 yards and a touchdown, on a season-high 21 attempts.

New York is fresh off surrendering 269 rushing yards to Philly last week, opening the door for another big night for Harris.

If there’s a silver lining for the Giants defense, it’s their pass rush. New York entered Week 8 with a league-high 31 sacks, generating pressure on 24% of opponent drop backs.

Giants vs Steelers Prediction

The only viable reason to bet the Giants would be to fade the public. No one is wagering on New York at this point, as they’ve been lifeless for most of the season.

The win-loss trends also point to a Pittsburgh victory. The Steelers haven’t lost at home on Monday Night Football since 1991. Daniel Jones meanwhile, is a disaster in primetime, going 1-14 straight up.

No one would fault you for hammering Pittsburgh in this spot, but the under is also attractive. The Giants are a mess on offense, and a date with the Steelers won’t fix that. Pittsburgh will likely be content to pound the rock relentlessly here, slowing down the New York pass rush and soaking up the clock.

NFL Team Under Trends

Team Under Record Under % Total +/-
New York Giants 6-1 85.7% -7.4
Pittsburgh Steelers 4-3 57.1% -2.2

Giants games are 6-1 to the under this season, while 63% of their games have gone under since drafting Daniel Jones. The Steelers meanwhile, have seen four of their seven outings fall short of the total. The under is 2-1 in their three home games, and 18-10-1 (64.3%) at home since 2021.
