Gareth Edwards On How Anime Inspired The Creator

A Sci-Fi feast, The Creator boasts incredible visuals and a story that challenges the notion of what it means to be human. In a film that boasts a lot of eye-catching aspects, the vehicle design is something that will stick with you. Director Gareth Edwards shared how anime and manga served as inspiration for the final look of these mega machines.

Gareth Edwards On How Anime Inspired The Creator

Amidst a future war between the human race and the forces of artificial intelligence, Joshua (John David Washington), a hardened ex-special forces agent grieving the disappearance of his wife (Gemma Chan), is recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator, the elusive architect of advanced AI who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end the war… and mankind itself. Joshua and his team of elite operatives journey across enemy lines, into the dark heart of AI-occupied territory… only to discover the world-ending weapon he’s been instructed to destroy is an AI in the form of a young child (Madeline Yuna Voyles).

If there is one thing we all want in Sci-fi films other than an expansive universe, are epic, mind-blowing, essentially super cool gadgets and machines. The Creator checks off those boxes and we have fellow geek Gareth Edwards and his production designer James Klein to thank.

Gareth: James Klein, who is our Production Designer, should take credit for a lot of that. We wanted to put a tank in the movie that felt like something that should be in an anime film. You know, like one of these futuristic, crazy, over-the-top tanks. But if you just scale up a tank it doesn’t look very exciting. So it was like trying to create negative space and cut things out, where it still retains the basics of a tank, but has a shape you wouldn’t expect. Our secret hope was that we wanted Bandai, which is the company who makes all the toy models of Manga and anime characters…

We wanted Bandai to release this as a model kit one day. And so we’d actually take Bandai boxes off the internet and put our tank on it, to see if it felt like something, if we were in the store, we’d go, oh my God, I gotta get that. And until we got really excited and jealous and wanted to buy this toy, we kept going until it looked great.

The Creator is in theaters September 29. It is rated PG-13 for violence, some bloody images and strong language with a runtime of 2 hours and 13 minutes.
