Galway Summer Festival Day 3 Tips: 9/1 shot to step up to the Plate

Galway Racecourse Flat

It’s been an enjoyable couple of days at Ballybrit so far and the action continues on Wednesday with a seven-race card running from 16:50-20:15.

Once again, I’ve got a couple of Galway Summer Festival Day 3 tips – including a 9/1 shot in the featured Galway Plate.

Galway Summer Festival Day 3 Tips

  • 16:50 – Don’tstopthemusic @ 9/4
  • 19:10 – Zanahiyr e/w @ 9/1

16:50 – Don’tstopthemusic @ 9/4

The opener is a maiden hurdle over 2m5f that’s attracted 20 runners – including DON’TSTOPTHEMUSIC for Martin Brassil.

I tipped the seven-year-old son of Kayf Tara for a bumper at the Punchestown Festival in May and after sustained support he bolted up by six lengths, confirming the promise he’d shown during an interrupted career.

Hopefully he can put a run together now. Brassil came away from County Kildare saying the selection, whom he “always thought was a nice horse” would be targeted at Galway and even said the half-brother to 2015 Champion Chase winner Dodging Bullets did a pleasing piece of work alongside two-time Punchestown Gold Cup hero Fastorslow. High praise indeed.

He’s improved between all three runs to date and hopefully that trend can continue as he tackles flights for the second time.

This isn’t a particularly strong contest so if he’s to be anywhere near as good over hurdles as that bumper win suggested, he really ought to be winning this.

Today’s Horse Races

19:10 – Zanahiyr e/w @ 9/1

The Galway Plate – a Grade 3 handicap chase over just shy of 2m7f – is one of racing’s summer highlights. Twenty two go to post for this renewal and a cool €159,300 is awarded to the winner.

Who will take home the prize? I’m hoping ZANAHIYR for Gordon Elliott.

The seven-year-old was a classy juvenile back in 2020 and while he’s often struggled at the very highest level, he’s held his own in excellent company since.

Connections decided to go chasing halfway through last season and the results were mixed. There was no shame in going down to Brown Advisory winner and now major Gold Cup hope Fact To File on his debut, although he was beaten a long way, and his subsequent victory over Aspire Tower is decent form – while finishing fourth in the Turners at the Cheltenham Festival is solid. He ended the campaign with a bitterly disappointing effort at Fairyhouse, but after a long season that can be excused. I’d put a line through that.

He’s been freshened up since and takes in a handicap for the very first time off what I believe to be a highly-attractive mark of 145. He also gets favourable good ground which is another plus alongside Jack Kennedy picking him over the likes of last year’s winner Ash Tree Meadow.

This is a Super Extra Place Race, so Betfred are paying 6 places instead of 4 at 1/5 the odds for all each-way bets.
