Galway Summer Festival Day 2 Tips: Two for Tuesday at Ballybrit
Galway’s famous Summer Festival, which features both jumps and flat racing, continues on Tuesday with a seven-race offering that gets underway at 16:50 and concludes shortly after 20:15.
I’ve come up with a couple of Galway Summer Festival Day 2 tips, including a highly-progressive British raider bidding for a seven-timer.
16:50 – Gale Mahler @ 13/2
Willie Mullins has won five of the last nine renewals of this Listed novice hurdle over an extended two miles and there’s no denying the claims of his Frankel gelding Gaucher.
However, he’s not exactly bombproof given his record over obstacles (1-3) and how keenly he’s raced in all three starts – plus I am concerned about him and Al Gasparo taking each other on for the lead given both made all to win by wide margins last time out.
With that in mind, I suggest playing British raider GALE MAHLER at a generous price.
Adrian Keatley’s five-year-old mare has won five on the bounce in the UK, including all three outings over hurdles following a couple of bumper victories.
The form on offer is modest enough, but beating the hat-trick seeking Letterson Lily by a comfortable four lengths last time out reads relatively well and there’s no doubt she has a lot more to offer.
She has form over longer trips too so if the forecasted frontrunners do indeed turn this into a fair test, it ought to suit.
Gale Mahler is my best bet for Day 2.
18:00 – Marazion @ 9/4
Just over an hour later is a fillies’ maiden over seven furlongs which can go to MARAZION.
Jessie Harrington’s Sea The Stars filly, who holds an entry for the G1 Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh next month, was a promising sixth (of 15) in a competitive maiden a month ago which is working out nicely.
The runner-up Red Letter bolted up next time out, while the fifth-placed And So To Bed has also won subsequently. Senna’s Girl, who was third, has also held her own in a Group 3.
This assignment looks easier. Aidan O’Brien’s Bubbling is likely to prove popular and a market check is advised on Paddy Twomey’s newcomer Lady Mairen, but otherwise this is a modest race and as far as I’m concerned the selection boasts as good, if not better form than all 13 of her rivals while also possessing as much scope.
