The 2023 MotoGP season is down to its final two races, this weekend’s Qatar Airways Grand Prix of Qatar and next week’s Gran Premio Motul de la Comunitat Valenciana. The 2023 MotoGP Riders’ Championship could come down to how the top riders, Francesco Bagnaia and Jorge Martin, finish in those two races. Bagnaia, last year’s MotoGP champion, leads Martin, who finished in ninth place in 2022, by 14 points heading into this week’s Qatar GP. Here is some information on Sunday’s Qatar GP before we discuss the betting odds, picks, and predictions for the race, which takes place at Lusail International Circuit.
The inaugural event on this course was the Marlboro Grand Prix of Qatar in October 2004. The winningest riders on the course are Valentino Rossi (2005, 2006, 2010, 2015), and Casey Stoner (2007-2009, 2011). No rider has won back-to-back MotoGP events in the race since Andrea Dovizioso did so in 2018 and 2019. Enea Bastianini won the race in 2022. Martin started on the pole but failed to complete the race. Bagnaia also did not finish. However, Bagnaia placed third in 2021, after starting in the pole position, in his first go in the Qatar GP. Martin placed 15th in that race, which was also his first start in the race.

Jorge Martin
With two races remaining in the 2023 MotoGP season, Jorge Martin is the only rider who can unseat Francesco Bagnaia as the champion. The 25-year-old, who finished his first two MotoGP seasons in ninth place, is 14 points behind Bagnaia heading into Sunday’s Qatar Airways Grand Prix of Qatar. The Prima Pramac Racing rider is the betting favorite this weekend after placing fourth in Malaysia. The week before the Malaysia race, Martin picked up his fourth win of the year in Thailand.
Martin has been dominant since the 2023 Catalan motorcycle Grand Prix. He has placed fifth, fourth, third, and second and had three wins since that race. The only race he didn’t place in the top five in the past eight starts was when he failed to finish in Indonesia.
Martin did not finish the race in Qatar in 2022, but he started the race on the pole.
Francesco Bagnaia
Reigning MotoGP champion Francesco Bagnaia increased his points lead over Jorge Martin in the riders’ standings last week when he finished in third place at the Malaysia GP. Despite his lead, and his six wins this year, the 26-year-old is not a lock to repeat as MotoGP champion. Martin remains an enormous threat to Bagnaia’s hopes of repeating in 2023.
It was not that long ago that Bagnaia had a 66-point lead over the MotoGP pack. That cushion made the Ducati rider an overwhelming favorite to win his second straight MotoGP title. However, Bagnaia hit a rough patch between Week 11 and Week 13 of the 2023 MotoGP season. During those three weeks, he did not start Gran Premi Monster Energy de Catalunya, finished third at the Gran Premio Red Bull di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini, and crashed out of the IndianOil Grand Prix of India. The defending champion has bounced back in his five most recent races, winning the Motul Grand Prix of Japan, finishing as the runner-up in Indonesia, Australia and Thailand, and placing third in Malaysia.
Bagnaia did not finish the Qatar race in 2022.
Enea Bastianini
The winner of the 2022 Qatar GP, Enea Bastianini, picked up his first win of the 2023 MotoGP season last week in Malaysia. The 25-year-old, who rides for Ducati. Injuries have made 2023 a difficult year for Bastianini, but his win last week will give him and the team confidence heading into one of the four competitions he won in 2022 when he finished the year in third place.
After his win in Malaysia, Bastianini said, “It’s fantastic after this (expletive) season for me to arrive at this victory.”

There is a lot on the line for Jorge Martin and Francesco Bagnaia heading into this weekend’s Qatar GP. Both men have a better-than-average chance of winning, but Bagnaia presents the better betting value ahead of Sunday’s race. One other thing to consider is that Bagnaia’s teammates on the Ducati Lenovo Team could be in the mix to help the defending MotoGP champion pick up the victory, and the points that go with it, at the Qatar Airways Grand Prix of Qatar. Bagnaia is the betting pick to win this week.
