Former highly-touted Nebraska tight end Arik Gilbert’s journey took a troubling turn as he was apprehended in the early hours of Tuesday on charges of burglary in Lincoln, Nebraska. The Lincoln Police Department reported that Gilbert, aged 21, was arrested without incident while exiting a liquor and vape store carrying a bag. Responding to a burglary report, officers found the store’s glass door shattered. Gilbert was in possession of stolen items, including vape products valued at over $1,600, with the store incurring around $650 worth of damage.
Gilbert’s turbulent collegiate career has been characterized by transfers and personal difficulties. A former American football No. 6 overall recruit in the 2020 class, he began at LSU and displayed promise with 35 receptions for 368 yards in his freshman year. However, transfers to Florida and later to Georgia followed due to personal issues. In 2022, he joined Nebraska, awaiting an NCAA eligibility decision as he had already utilized his one-time transfer exception.
The Huskers had hoped for a resolution ahead of their season opener against Minnesota. Gilbert’s arrest, a severe setback, adds to his challenges. The 6’5″ tight end, once seen as a prodigious talent, now faces legal and NCAA hurdles. As he navigates these obstacles, his potential contribution to the Cornhuskers remains uncertain.
