Football Bet of the Day: Young Lions to take their foot off the gas

Football Bet of the Day: Young Lions to take their foot off the gas

England Under-21s play their final group clash in the European Championships on Wednesday, and while their place in the knockout rounds is already secure, holders Germany Under-21s are at risk of elimination.

Lee Carsley’s side have already secured their spot in the knockout stages, but Antonio Di Salvo’s Germany side have only taken a point from their opening two matches.

Carsley could not have asked for much more from his team this summer, with the Young Lions already through to the knockout stages with a game to spare.

England U21s have won both of their group matches 2-0, with the Czech Republic and Israel unable to stop Carsley’s men.

Germany opened the tournament with a 1-1 draw against Israel and they fell to a 2-1 defeat against the Czech Republic on Sunday.

England looked a level above Israel last time out, and they appear to have learned their lessons from previous European Championships. The Young Lions had been knocked out in the Under-21 Euros group stage in five of the last six editions, but this time they seem full of confidence.

Whether they can go all the way remains to be seen, but Carsley can at least experiment with his team and give some of his star players a rest this week.

Football Betting Odds

Germany have to go for broke and win on Wednesday, but they may still be eliminated if the Czech Republic draw or win against Israel. England boss Carsley was without Max Aarons for the win over Israel due to illness, and he is likely to make several changes.

Harvey Elliott, Cole Palmer, Oliver Skipp and Cameron Archer could all earn starts, and the disruption may play into Germany’s hands.

Di Salvo’s outfit have dominated both of their matches and got no rewards, and finding the back of the net is never usually an issue. They have only failed to trouble the scoresheet in two of their previous 10 in all competitions.

England’s successive wins suggest they are the better side, but it is difficult to back them with any conviction due to the expected changes.

Carsley’s youngsters will want to send a message to the rest of the competition that they can avoid defeat against the holders even without a full-strength team, and we expect England’s second string to frustrate Germany as they end their dreams of defending their crown.
