Football Bet of the Day: Young Lions to reach final four

After enjoying a perfect group stage, England Under-21s will return to action on Sunday at the European Championships as they face Portugal Under-21s in Kutaisi.

Football Bet of the Day – Sunday 2 July, 2023

  • England to win and both teams to score @ 11/4

Date: Sunday 2 July, 2023
Time: 17:00
Location: Ramaz Shengelias Sakhelobis, Kutaisi

Lee Carsley’s England qualified for the knockout stages of the competition after just two matches, recording back-to-back 2-0 wins over Israel and the Czech Republic.

The former Everton midfielder decided to make a plethora of changes for their final Group C match against Germany, but his side still ran out 2-0 winners as they eliminated the defending champions.

Cameron Archer and Harvey Elliott both got on the scoresheet after being handed starts and the duo will be hoping they have done enough to retain their places in the starting XI for the quarter-final clash.

It has been a perfect tournament for the Young Lions so far, as they are yet to concede and have scored six goals, and they will fancy their chances of overcoming Portugal on Sunday.

After keeping three clean sheets England will feel confident they will soon be facing Georgia or Israel in the semi-finals, but this last-eight tussle will be no walk in the park and it could be their toughest test yet.

Even though Portugal finished second in Group A, it also contained the Netherlands and Belgium as well as joint-hosts Georgia, and it was labelled this year’s “Group of Death”.

Portugal also have the added advantage of winning their last two meetings against England at this level, but Sunday’s tie is the first ever in the knockout stages.

England’s players should be the fresher of the two after Carsley rung the changes last time out, with Max Aarons now fully recovered from illness.

Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Levi Colwill are due to return at the back, while Morgan Gibbs-White, Emile Smith Rowe, Anthony Gordon and Angel Gomes are all due to come back into the fold.

Portugal boss Rui Jorge has no new injury concerns to deal with, but his players have been pushed a little harder of late.

Despite England’s impressive form at the back, Portugal are a threat in front of goal and they have scored in 17 of their previous 18 matches.

While they should be able to breach England’s goal, it should be the Young Lions who progress in an entertaining match.
