Derry City are second in the League of Ireland Premier Division table while visitors Cork City are second from bottom but it may pay to ignore those league positions when the teams meet on Friday.
After a tough start to the campaign, Cork have won four of their last five matches including a first away victory of the season at Drogheda on 2nd June.
They are big underdogs to win at Derry but the hosts’ hopes of overhauling leaders Shamrock Rovers have been hit by a four-game winless run and they are worth opposing on Friday.
Football Bet of the Day – Friday 23rd June, 2023
Cork City or Draw Double Chance v Derry City @ 15/8
Date: Friday 23 June, 2023
Time: 19:45
Location: Brandywell Stadium, Derry
Cork City took a while to find their feet after being promoted to the top flight, winning only two of their first 15 matches of the 2023 season, although they showcased their goalscoring threat early on this term.
A 4-0 home win over UCD in March was followed by a 4-4 draw with Shamrock Rovers, who are now six points clear at the top, when they let slip a 4-2 lead in the final ten minutes.
Cork have given their survival chances a real boost in the last few weeks, winning four games on the spin before a 2-0 home defeat to Dundalk last time out, and the Cork or draw selection looks a big price in the double-chance market on Friday.
Taking on Derry City at the Brandywell Stadium is never an easy assignment but Cork should be full of confidence having beaten table-topping Shamrock Rovers and fourth-placed Bohemians in recent games.
Derry boss Ruaidhri Higgins has seen his side’s title hopes dented by a run during which they have picked up just two points from four league matches and they are no certainties to beat Cork on home turf.
The Candystripes are missing injured midfielders William Patching and Patrick McEleney, who scored in February’s 2-0 win over Cork, and they will need to sharpen up in front of goal after failing to break down Bohemians in a goalless stalemate last time out.
Derry’s previous home game against Shelbourne also finished 0-0 and they have lost their last two on the road, a 1-0 defeat at Sligo Rovers and a 4-1 reverse at St Patrick’s.
The Candystripes won 3-1 at Cork in April but the underdogs are in far better form coming into Friday’s rematch and visiting teams have had plenty of success at Brandywell this term.
Only four of Derry’s ten league victories have come at home and they have lost to nil against leaders Shamrock Rovers, Bohemians and Drogheda.
Four of their 11 home matches this season, including the last two, have finished in draws so resurgent Cork are a tempting price in the double-chance market.
