Football Bet of the Day: Santos to cause more consternation amongst Coritiba faithful

Santos produced the goods in last Friday’s football bet of the day as the Campeonato Brasileiro Serie B leaders drew 1-1 at Vila Nova to land a 1/1 on both teams scoring, and I’m returning to Peixe for Tuesday’s football bet of the day as they host Coritiba at Estadio Urbano Caldeira (00:00).

Football Odds

A top-of-the-table clash between Vila Nova and Santos last week failed to produce a winner, but the 1-1 scoreline ensured the latter kept their tag as leaders heading into the 17th round this week.

The stalemate also made it six games unbeaten for Santos, who have won all six Serie B matches they have played at Estadio Urbano Caldeira this term; their only ‘home’ defeat was against Botafogo SP (1-2) at a different venue – Estadio do Cafe in Londrina.

In those six outings at their home, Santos have conceded just once – in a 4-1 win over Guarani on May 7, and there were no spectators for that thrashing, meaning that Peixe have won all five games without conceding in front of supporters at Estadio Urbano Caldeira.

They will be expected to extend their winning streak at home on Tuesday against a side 12 places and nine points below them.

Coritiba made a solid start to the season, winning five of their first 11 matches, but they’re now winless in their last five, losing three of them. In fact, they’ve failed to even score in two of those losses and are now just two points above the relegation zone, quite the comedown for a club that was competing in Serie A last year.

Coxa finished 19th in the 20-team division, ending up with 13 points fewer than 17th-placed Santos, who took the final relegation spot, though they did hold them to a goalless draw in Curitiba before losing 2-1 in the reverse fixture.

A lot has changed since that result in October last year, certainly personnel-wise, but one thing that remains the same is that Santos are above Coritiba in the standings and are also expected to win at home again.

Coritiba’s only goal of the game at Estadio Urbano Caldeira last season was via the penalty spot, and they may need something similar to get on the scoresheet on Tuesday as only seven sides have scored fewer than their total of 15 strikes from 16 matches.

Furthermore, only Ponte Preta (two) have scored fewer on their travels than Coritiba (three), who have blanked in five of their seven Serie B away outings.

Coritiba’s forwards won’t exactly be encouraged by the defensive record of their next opponents, who have the second-best defence in the league, with only Operario (nine) having conceded fewer than their tally of 12.

Operario (two) are also the only team to have let in fewer goals at home than Santos (three), whose quest for a sixth straight clean sheet – home or away – was only stopped by a 65th-minute strike from Vila Nova’s Jemmes in their closely-fought battle with the second-placed side last Friday.

Santos have been resolute at the back, but despite winning four of their last six matches, they’ve not exactly been rampant in front of goal as half of those victories were 2-0, and the other half 1-0.
