Football Bet of the Day: Rovers can continue stunning start to campaign

Early League 2 pacesetters Doncaster Rovers will be aiming to maintain their lead at the summit of the fourth tier when they travel to Wetherby Road to face Harrogate on Thursday (20:00, Sky Sports Main Event). Rovers currently hold a one-point lead over nearest rivals Notts County and Grant McCann’s men have won four of their opening five league matches, scoring a joint league-best 10 goals.

The Sulphurites are two points above the relegation zone in 20th position, with just one win recorded from five matches, and their fortunes are unlikely to turn around against the division’s strongest side, as suggested in my football bet of the day below…

Doncaster’s miraculous upturn in form last season saw them go from strong relegation candidates in February to a play-off finish, with their storied promotion push eventually ended by Crewe Alexandra in the semi-finals via a penalty shootout.

That end-of-season heartbreak has seemingly spurred Rovers on for a stronger campaign this time out, with McCann’s men winning six of their eight matches in all competitions this season – suffering defeat in the league at Newport (3-1) and in the Carabao Cup at Everton (3-0).

Rovers’ strong form should see them comfortably see off a Harrogate side that are winless in five matches at Wetherby Road, a run that stretches into last season.

Town have lost all three home assignments this season to nil, going down 2-0 to Bromley and 1-0 to Barrow in the league either side of a 5-0 hammering by Preston in the cup.

Harrogate won this fixture 3-1 back in January but since then the Sulphurites have gone on to win just eight of their 27 fixtures across league and cup matches.

Simon Weaver’s men are one of just two sides in the fourth tier yet to find the back of the net at home this season, alongside Morecambe.

That lack of cutting edge in front of goal is likely to continue on Thursday night and a tough night is expected for Harrogate, with Rovers looking a decent price to claim a shutout victory.
