The 2023 UEFA European Under-21 Championship gets underway on Tuesday and our Football Bet of the Day focuses on one of the co-hosts Romania, as they take on a highly-fancied Spain in Group B.
No team has won the European Under-21 Championships more often than Spain, who claimed the most recent of their five successes in 2019, while they have also reached the final at four of the last six tournaments.
Co-hosts Romania do not boast as big a pedigree on the under-21 stage, although this is the third time in a row they have qualified for the finals and they made it all the way to the semi-finals in 2019, where they were eventually beaten by Germany.
Romania will also have an expectant home support behind them in Bucharest, but this is likely to be a tough assignment against a Spain side who are among the favourites at 4/1 to go on and lift the trophy.

The top two in each group will advance through to the knockout stages of this year’s European Under-21 Championship and Spain should have no problems emerging from a section that contains Ukraine and Croatia as well as their opponents on Tuesday, Romania.
Santi Denia’s side are a team in form, as they are unbeaten in 14 matches, a run that stretches back to the last European Under-21 Championship in 2021, with 12 of those games ending in victory.
A pre-tournament friendly draw with Mexico was a rare blip in what has been an otherwise near-perfect run for Spain since former Atletico Madrid star Santi’s appointment as head coach last year and the 49-year-old has a wealth of exciting options within his squad.
One of those stars is Manchester City defender Sergio Gomez, who operates in a more attacking role for his country, as showcased by his tally of six goals in 13 appearances for La Rojita.
Scoring goals is certainly no issue for Spain, as they have netted two or more in 12 of their last 14 games, including notching six against Northern Ireland, seven versus Malta and eight in a home clash with Lithuania.
That run also includes a 4-1 victory over Romania last September when Abel Ruiz and Rodrigo Riquelme both notched braces – those two players are in line to feature once again on Tuesday,
Braga front man Abel is one of three players in the Spain squad, alongside Hugo Guillamon and Juan Miranda, who have also represented Spain at senior level and they should have too much quality for a Romania side who are without a win in five matches, a run that stretches back over a year.
Emil Sandoi’s side are short of wins, form and confidence, not an ideal recipe heading into a tournament on home soil and, although theycould still come through the group at the expense of Ukraine and Croatia, they are likely to come up considerably short against Spain, who could score plenty of goals on their way to securing all three points.
