England are yet to concede a goal at the Under-21 Euros so they look very backable at 15/8 to continue on that path and beat Israel in a game featuring under 2.5 goals in Wednesday’s semi-final.
Lee Carsley’s side have so far seen off Czech Republic, Germany and, tellingly, Wednesday’s opponents, Israel, all by a 2-0 scoreline in the group stage, before they followed those results up with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Portugal in the quarters.
Football Bet of the Day – Wednesday 5 July, 2023
- England and under 2.5 goals @ 15/8
Theoretically, Israel represent an easier test than the Portuguese did last time out, and considering the young Lions have already dismissed them 2-0 in this very tournament, another controlled evening surely awaits for Carsley’s men, who now not only have an eye on the final but going on to lift the trophy too.
England have arguably been the best side in the competition so far and are potentially just 180 minutes from glory as the current Under-21s attempt to emulate the classes of 1982 and 1984 and become just the third England side of this age group to be crowned kings of the continent.
Israel have done well to get to this stage but their form sheet reads less impressively than England’s. They are clear underdogs at 7/1 to win in normal time, while the 1/3 available on an England win in the full-time market does not particularly appeal at a short price.
Guy Luzon’s side drew 1-1 with Germany first up in Group C, then lost to England, before nipping into second place and therefore earning qualification thanks to a 1-0 success over the Czechs. That victory was only secured by an 82nd-minute winner, though, and they then had to rely on penalties to edge out co-hosts Georgia in the last eight after their tie had ended goalless after extra-time.
While England’s progress has been comfortable for the most part, Israel have clearly had to work very hard to reach this stage and there does appear to be a difference in class between the two sides.
So backing England to win to nil again seems a wise move but at 19/20, it may prove a bit short for some punters and a win for Carsley’s side and under 2.5 goals carries more value.
The young Lions have won 12 of their last 15 games and they should be in a bullish mood ahead of this last-four clash. They face a limited, inconsistent Israel team who, before their vital win over the Czechs, had failed to pick up a victory in six previous games, while their overall record in their last 15 outings reads: Won five, drawn five, lost five.
England have a team littered with rising stars of the Premier League. Anthony Gordon, Levi Colwill, Curtis Jones and Emile Smith Rowe are all familiar to top-flight audiences, whereas, in contrast, the Israel squad is full of promising home-grown talent, with the vast majority still cutting their teeth in the modest Israeli Premier League.
On paper, it looks to be somewhat of a mismatch and England can underline their superiority – just like they did in the group stage – by picking up another controlled victory and landing themselves a place in Saturday’s final in the process.
