On Sunday, yet another big final, as this football season seems destined to be with us until Xmas! Seriously though, we’re getting to the last hurrah stakes, and here’s a fine opportunity for one of these great footballing nations to lift a prestigious international trophy.
Croatia reached their first Nations League final courtesy of a 4-2 victory after extra time against hosts Netherlands. Spain beat Italy 2-1 thanks to an 88th-minute Joselu strike, and will look to avenge the memory of 2021 when they lost 2-1 to France in the final.

At Euro 2020, these two met with Spain winning a thriller 5-3, after extra time. Mario Pašalić had struck in injury time for Croatia to level the scores up at 3-3, but extra time contributions from Álvaro Morata and Mikel Oyarzabal secured the match for Spain.
Lots of superficial evidence, including the one above, points to goals on Sunday night in Rotterdam, but my abiding thought is how tight it’s likely to be as to the eventual outcome.
We saw with last Saturday’s Champions League Final how tense and exhausting these huge matches are at the end of gruelling campaigns. One that, don’t forget, hosted a World Cup about halfway through.
Players that will be dreaming of an all-too-brief sojourn on a welcoming beach somewhere have to once again raise themselves to fight for a huge pot. I raise my hat and my glass to them all. Quite remarkable.
Unsurprisingly perhaps, Spain are 90 minute favourites at Evens, then it’s 11/4 Croatia, and 12/5 the Draw.
Luca Modric will be looking to stamp his considerable authority on proceedings from the Croatian midfield, while Spain have Man City hero Rodri at the heart of their engine room.
If it’s written that there will goals, great. But of greater import in my view is that it might be difficult for one side to establish domination over the other, so a 90-minute draw is my suggestion, at 12/5.
