Football Accumulator Tips: Pep to exact Red Devils revenge in 10/1 fivefold

Wembley Stadium

The 2024/25 EFL season kicks off this weekend with all three divisions – the Championship, League 1 and League 2 – on show.

A game from each of those three leagues features in my football accumulator tips for Saturday, August 10, and combined with the Community Shield and a match from Austria, make up a 9.91/1 fivefold.

Manchester City (N) to beat Manchester United @ 8/15

The traditional Premier League curtain-raiser takes place at Wembley on Saturday (15:00), as Manchester City and Manchester United meet in the Community Shield.

Reigning Premier League champions Man City are looking for revenge after a shock 2-1 defeat to their local rivals in May’s FA Cup Final, a result which seemingly saved Erik ten Hag’s job at Man United.

The Red Devils were depleted for that victory under the arch, and it’s the same again this weekend with Rasmus Hojlund and new signing Leny Yoro both out injured, while Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof are rated doubtful.

Portugal pair Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot, alongside Argentine duo Lisandro Martinez and Alejandro Garnacho, have all returned to team training but are unlikely to all start.

Kyle Walker, Phil Foden, Bernardo Silva and Rodri are among those who haven’t played a part in pre-season for City, and the trio are more likely to return next weekend’s for the club’s Premier League opener against Chelsea. Kevin De Bruyne is also considered unlikely to feature on Saturday.

However, City showed their class against Chelsea in a friendly in the USA last week, with reigning Premier League Golden Boot holder Erling Haaland helping himself to a hat-trick in Columbus.

The Norwegian will be licking his lips against a weakened United side, and I think Pep Guardiola’s charges will get their long-awaited revenge.

Middlesbrough (H) to beat Swansea City @ 9/10

Middlesbrough are among the favourites for promotion in the Championship this season, and Michael Carrick will be looking for his players to send out a statement in their opening fixture against Swansea City at the Riverside Stadium on Saturday (12:30).

There were 12 points separating these sides last season as Boro finished eighth and Swansea in 14th, and the Teessiders won home and away against the Swans.

Boro won 2-1 in south Wales last December before coasting to a 2-0 victory at the Riverside in March, Emmanuel Latte Lath scoring both on Teesside, and I don’t think too much has changed since that result.

Saturday’s hosts haven’t been too active in the transfer market but look to have a settled side and will fancy their chances of getting off to a good start if Latte Lath can pick up from where he left off last season when he scored 11 times in Boro’s final 12 games.

Swansea won three on the trot after losing at the Riverside before ending the season with a 2-2 draw at Norwich City and a 1-0 home defeat to Millwall. Head coach Luke Williams has made a few notable signings such as Goncalo Franco and Eom Ji-sung, but has lost one of his main central defenders, Nathan Wood, to Southampton.

I think Carrick’s side will make home advantage count on Saturday and pick up all three points against the Swans.

Birmingham City (H) to beat Reading @ 4/7

After the pain of relegation in May, Birmingham City’s wealthy owners quickly made their intentions clear for the upcoming League 1 campaign by launching an all-out assault on the transfer market, breaking the division’s transfer record twice by following up the capture of William Thor Willumsson with a move for Christoph Klarer.

Alfie May has also joined the blue half of Birmingham after claiming the League 1 Golden Boot award with Charlton Athletic last season, and Chris Davies’ side look sure-fire candidates to win the league at a canter.

They start the season at their St. Andrew’s home on Saturday (17:30) and will be expected to beat a Reading side that stumbled to 17th place in 2023/24. The Royals’ away record was particularly brutal as they picked up just 18 points on the road, with only Cambridge United and relegated Carlisle United accruing fewer on their travels.

It would be a big surprise if Birmingham don’t kick off life in the third tier with a victory, and I’m certainly not expecting a shock myself. In they go as the third leg of this fivefold.

AFC Wimbledon (H) to beat Colchester United @ 19/20

The third and final EFL fixture of this accumulator, AFC Wimbledon host Colchester United at the Cherry Red Records Stadium on Saturday (15:00).

The sides met twice in League 2 last season – the Dons came out on top at home (5-3) and away (0-2) – with 20 points eventually separating them in the table.

The U’s stayed up by a meagre three points while the Dons were five points from seventh-placed Crawley Town who secured the final League 2 play-off spot.

Colchester only picked up 20 points from 23 away games last season while Wimbledon collected 39 points at home – only seven clubs won more points at their own stadium.

Anything can happen at the start of the year, but based on everything that has gone before, the Dons look well-placed to kick off the campaign with a victory.

FC Red Bull Salzburg (H) to beat FC Blau-Weiss Linz @ 2/9

It’s been a strong start to life in Austria for Jurgen Klopp’s former right-hand man Pep Lijnders, who made the move from Liverpool to Salzburg earlier this summer to restart his career in management.

A 6-0 win at Dornbirn in the OFB Cup was followed by last week’s 3-2 victory over Grazer in the Austrian Bundesliga before Lijnders oversaw a 2-1 win against FC Twente on Tuesday in the first leg of their Champions League third-round qualifier.

Next, Salzburg host BW Linz, who started their league campaign with a 1-0 win at home to Austria Vienna. BW Linz avoided defeat against Salzburg last season, winning 1-0 at the Red Bull Arena last September before holding Salzburg to a 1-1 draw at the Hofmann Personal Stadion in February.

However, this is a new-look Salzburg under Lijnders, and they look reinvigorated under the Dutchman. They may have one eye on Tuesday’s second leg against Twente but should have enough to get past BW Linz at home.
