Fokiano
Fokiano is a red grape variety primarily planted in mainland Greece and the Aegean islands, most notably Ikaria.
This ancient grape is thought to be the source of the famous Pramnian wine mentioned by Homer. The first documented mention of Fokiano by its current name comes from a 15th-century European traveler. Today, it produces both dry and sweet red wines, known for their distinct aroma, long finish, and bright ruby color.
Cultivated extensively on the terraced vineyards of Ikaria, Fokiano grapes benefit from the island’s unique terroir. The grapes form loose bunches with medium-sized berries, and each vine produces less than 500 kilograms per acre. In the first two years, Fokiano wines are fresh and high in acidity, with flavors dominated by red forest fruits like cherries, sour cherries, wild cherries, blackberries, and mulberries. After five years, the wines develop more mature fruit flavors, spices such as white pepper, and local Ikarian herbs.
As Fokiano wines age between eight to ten years, they transform, showcasing jammy qualities, reminiscent of thick, liquor-like drinks and traditional sweet preserves. These aged wines offer aromas of leather and a robust plum liqueur taste, making them a unique tasting experience.
The Fokiano vine is moderately vigorous, fertile, and productive, resistant to many fungal diseases and drought. It begins to bud in early April and ripens by early September. Each fruitful cane bears 2-3 large clusters, each weighing over 500 grams. The grape thrives in medium-textured soils, with clay-rich soils being ideal for red wine production.
Fokiano wines typically have moderate alcohol content and acidity, and their color can evolve from medium ruby to brownish hues over time. Although no Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) wines are made solely from Fokiano, it contributes to several Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) wines from regions like the Cyclades, Lesvos, Chios, and Messinia. Besides red wines, Fokiano also produces refreshing rosé and white wines (blanc de noir).
