England Women vs Portugal Women Prediction: Lionesses looking to sign off in style

England Women (1/8) play their final friendly before embarking on their 2023 World Cup campaign later this month in Australia and New Zealand.

The European champions lost to co-hosts the Matildas in their last friendly game, a defeat that ended a 30-game unbeaten run that fell just short of two full years.

The Lionesses will be keen to bounce back and sign off with a win before they head Down Under against a Portugal Women (12/1) outfit who are putting the finishing touches on their preparations for their own World Cup bid.

Team News

England head coach Sarina Wiegman has selected her 23-player squad for the World Cup and has included 16 players who were in the successful Euro 2022 team, with Leah Williamson, Fran Kirby and Beth Mead missing through injury.

Niamh Charles, Laura Coombs, Lauren James, Esme Morgan, Katie Robinson and Katie Zelem are all heading to their first major tournament.

Wiegman is likely to make plenty of changes over the course of the game against Portugal to try and give everyone some game time in the final preparation game and standby duo Maya Le Tissier and Jess Park may feature despite missing out on the main World Cup travelling party.

Portugal have also confirmed their final squad for Australia and New Zealand, with coach Francisco Neto expected to take a similar approach to Wiegman.

England -2 handicap @ 11/8

There is a gulf in class here between European champions England and Portugal and the hosts have a chance to make a statement before they travel to the Southern Hemisphere.

Three of the Lionesses’ last four wins have come by three or more goals and even if Wiegman does tinker with her lineup they can still win by a big margin.

Portugal are winless in two games (D1, L1) after seeing an eight-game unbeaten run ended but they do occasionally suffer big defeats as three of their last six losses have come by three or more goals, including a 5-0 humbling at the hands of Sweden at the Euros, so England should be able to cover a -2 handicap.

Football Betting Odds

Lauren Hemp to score anytime @ 6/4

Manchester City’s Lauren Hemp has a modest scoring record for England with 10 goals in 37 games but she ended the season in fine form for her club.

Hemp managed three goals in her final four appearances for City and can add to her international account on Saturday after failing to score in her last six outings for her country.
