England Women have a mountain to climb in this summer’s Ashes against Australia and know a defeat in the second Twenty20 international at the Oval will end the team’s hopes of regaining the trophy.
After winning the standalone Test match at Trent Bridge by 89 runs, Australia followed up with a four-wicket victory in the first T20 international, giving them a 6-0 lead in the series.
England must now take nine points from a possible 10 to win the Ashes with two T20s and three ODIs remaining.
The second T20 takes place at the Oval on Wednesday and another cracker is expected after the first T20 went down to the penultimate ball.
England Women vs Australia Women Betting Tips
Team news
Heather Knight is expected to captain an unchanged England team for the second T20 at The Oval with Danielle Gibson featuring in her maiden T20 series for her country.
There is no fresh team news to report for tourists Australia, who could select an unchanged XI.
Beth Mooney top Australia runscorer @ 2/1
With 23 wins in their last 24 matches in T20 internationals, Australia Women are a tremendously difficult team to get the better of in the shortest format.
They are both double world champions and Commonwealth Games winners and, although England got close last time out, it is easy to see why the tourists are 1/2 to win at the Oval and seal an Ashes triumph.
Their batting depth is impressive but one player stood out above the rest in the first T20 at Edgbaston.
Opener Beth Mooney finished on 61 not out in that contest, having scored nine fours in the Midlands, and she can cause England’s bowlers problems at the Oval as well.
Mooney was her country’s top scorer at the Women’s T20 World Cup in February, finishing with 206 runs from only six innings and she has stepped up to the plate this series.
In 2023, Mooney is averaging 39.13 in T20s for Australia and she is worth a bet to be her side’s top runscorer in the second match of the T20 segment of the Ashes.
Sophie Ecclestone top England wicket-taker @ 21/10
On the flip side, while Mooney has impressed with the bat for Australia, Sophie Ecclestone has been England’s standout player with the ball.
Similar to Mooney, Ecclestone laid down a marker at this year’s Women’s T20 World Cup with 11 scalps from five innings at an economy rate of 4.15.
The left-arm spinner is ranked number one in the world in T20s and has already demonstrated her class in this summer’s Ashes, racking up 10 wickets in the Trent Bridge Test and finishing with figures of 2-24 in the T20 at Edgbaston.
If anyone can trouble Australia’s danger batters it is Ecclestone, who looks the best bet to be England’s top wicket-taker at the Oval.
