England Women vs Australia Women Prediction: Ecclestone aiming to put Aussies in a spin

Australia Women sealed an entertaining 89-run victory over England Women in the one-off Test match at Trent Bridge so England need to win five of the six limited-overs games in order to regain the Ashes.

The three-match Twenty20 series starts at Edgbaston on Saturday, followed by three ODIs, and Australia have fond memories of the Birmingham venue, where they struck gold at last summer’s Commonwealth Games.

Team news

England batter Tammy Beaumont has been left out of the T20 squad despite her double-century in the Test match. Uncapped all-rounder Danielle Gibson is included and Issy Wong has been recalled but fellow fast bowler Lauren Filer misses out after making her Test debut at Trent Bridge.

Australia are confident that their captain and wicketkeeper Alyssa Healy will be fit although she has been troubled by two fractured fingers. If Healy is ruled out then Beth Mooney could keep wicket. Annabel Sutherland is likely to come into the middle-order after her century in the Test victory.

Sophie Ecclestone Top England Wicket Taker @ 5/2

England have won nine of the Ashes T20 internationals since the multi-format system was introduced in 2013, with Australia triumphing seven times, but the Aussies are hot favourites to extend their lead in the series with a Twenty20 victory at Edgbaston.

If England are to launch a comeback in Birmingham then their brilliant spinner Sophie Ecclestone may well play a significant role.

The left-armer is top of the ICC’s T20 bowling rankings and caused Australia all sorts of problems in the Trent Bridge Test, picking up five wickets in each innings.

Ecclestone was the leading bowler at this year’s Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa, dismissing 11 batters in five matches with an economy rate of just 4.15 runs per over, and she took 3-25 against India in her most recent T20 international in England.

Cricket Betting Odds

Tahlia McGrath Top Australia Run Scorer @ 6/1

Meg Lanning, who captained Australia to T20 World Cup glory in February, is unavailable for this Ashes tour so there will be more runscoring responsibility on the Aussie all-rounders.

The world champions have a fluid T20 batting order but Tahlia McGrath looks a good bet to be their top runscorer after making a brisk 61 in the first innings of the Test match.

McGrath had a wonderful Women’s Premier League campaign for UP Warriorz in India, where only Lanning and England star Nat Sciver-Brunt scored more than her 302 runs in March’s inaugural tournament.

England’s bowlers know all about her destructive Twenty20 batting as she hammered an unbeaten 91 off just 49 balls in their last Ashes clash in Adelaide in January 2022 and she has reached 40 in eight of her 18 T20 innings for Australia.
