The Philadelphia Eagles (1-0, 0-0 away) visit the New England Patriots (1-0, 1-0 home) at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, MA, this Thursday in the first game of Week 2 of the preseason.

Both teams were impressive in Week 1, with the Eagles earning a 16-13 road win at Baltimore, and the Pats demolishing Carolina 17-3 at home. New England is positioned as slight favorites in the Eagles vs Patriots odds for preseason Week 2.

No Week 2 line has undergone bigger movement than Eagles vs Patriots. When the spread opened on Sunday night, the Eagles were 2.5-point road favorites and .145 on the moneyline. Just 36 hours later, the line has flipped entirely. The game total has also moved considerably, getting bet up two full points from 33.5 to 35.5, despite neither team surpassing 30 points in their Week 1 games.

PHI vs NE: Who Will Play QB in Preseason Week 2?

Jalen Hurts, who didn’t play a snap during the 2023 preseason, was absent from Philly’s Week 1 game and is unlikely to see action in Week 2. It’s likely that the Eagles will, once again, give all the snaps to Kenny Pickett, Tanner McKee, and Will Grier when they visit the Pats in Foxborough.

Pickett was excellent in the Week 1 victory over Baltimore, connecting on 14/22 passes (63.6%) with one TD and no picks. McKee was much sloppier, going just 6/16 (37.5%) for 39 yards, just 2.44 yards per attempt. Grier didn’t see a snap.

Week 1 Quarterback Stats

Eagles Week 1 Stats Patriots Week 1 Stats
Kenny Pickett 14/22, 89 YDS, 1 TD, 2 Sacks Bailey Zappe 12/20, 108 YDS, 2 Sacks
Tanner McKee 6/16, 39 YDS Joe Milton 4/6, 54 YDS, 1 TD, 22 Rush YDS
Will Grier N/A Drake Maye 2/3, 19 YDS
Jacoby Brissett 0/3, 0 YDS

For the Patriots, third-year QB Bailey Zappe took the majority of the Week 1 snaps, going a solid 12/20 for  108 yards. He didn’t find the end zone or throw an interception. New England’s only passing TD of Week 1 came courtesy of rookie sixth-rounder Joe Milton, who was 4/6 for 54 yards and a major to undrafted rookie receiver JaQuae Jackson from Rutgers. His movement in the pocket belied his inexperience.

Cooper DeJean (Likely) Still Out for Eagles

The Eagles got good news this week when 2024 second-round pick Cooper DeJean, a defensive back out of Iowa, was taken off the Non-Football Injury list. But DeJean still isn’t doing any contact drills in practice and it’s highly unlikely that the Eagles would put him into a game situation, especially on a short week.

A handful of Eagles players missed practice entirely on Tuesday: LB Oren Burks (knee), TE Grant Calcaterra (shoulder), TE Albert Okwuegbunam (abdomen), S Caden Sterns (knee).

Tight end Hunter Henry and cornerback Jonathan Jones missed practice for the Patriots on Monday.

PHI Eagles vs NE Patriots Prediction for Preseason Week 2

Neither of these teams has been particularly good in the preseason over the last few years, but the Eagles in particular have been abysmal. Going back to 2021, Philadelphia is 2-6-2 in its last ten preseason games. The fact that Hurts hasn’t played a preseason snap since Week 1 of 2022 is a good indication of how Nick Sirianni treats the preseason.

With  Pickett playing so well in Week 1 against the Ravens, I expect the bulk of the snaps in Week 2 to go to McKee and Grier, and I suspect I’m not the only one; the massive line movement is a good indication that most bettors expect the Eagles to give their third and fourth-string pivots a lot of playing time.

PHI vs NE Picks:

  • Patriots moneyline (-140)
  • Under 35.5 (-110)
