Dreaming of Sunny Days With BC’s Meyer Chardonnay and Gewurztraminer 2022PR SAMPLE

Dreaming of Sunny Days With BC’s Meyer Chardonnay and Gewurztraminer 2022PR SAMPLE

  • By Admin

Our generally sunny, warmer than usual weather is holding out in BC, so I opened up two more bottles of white wines to enjoy (Well it was sunny when I opened this wine.  The clouds have now let loose, but you can still have sunny thoughts).  I have BC’s Meyer Family Vineyards Chardonnay 2022 and McLean Creek Road Vineyard Gewurztraminer 2022 to taste and review for you.  Let me tell you about them.

My Wine Tasting Notes

Meyer Family Vineyards Chardonnay 2022 (BC $20.96)

From the winery, “The grapes were gently whole cluster pressed with the juice being cold settled overnight. It was then racked off its heavy sediment into a combination of older seasoned French oak barrels (20%) and stainless-steel vessels (80%) where it went through a cool fermentation using a mix of indigenous and cultured yeast. The wine was left on its fine lees for six months, the wine went through 75% natural malolactic fermentation.” 2000 cases were produced.

Appearance: A medium intensity bright, clear lemon colour in the glass.
Nose: Medium-intensity aromas of toast and pineapple. No change to the aromas after decanting.
Palate: Dry and round with a thicker mouthfeel.  Medium-plus body and flavour intensity.  Medium acidity leaves an acidic prickle on your tongue.  Citrus, light toast, pineapple and oak flavours, with a touch of butterscotch toward the finish.  This wine has a buttery texture. The wine becomes more lean and less round on the palate with decanting.  No change to the flavours.
Finish: Medium-plus length finishing with ripe citrus, pineapple, oak and a touch of pepperiness. A tarter finish after decanting.

I prefer the undecanted version and it is rounder on your palate.  A nice price.

Rating: 4 stars4.5 stars An oaked Chardonnay that is not too big on the palate or too oaky.  Just right.  Toast and pineapple aromas, which follow to the palate.  Medium-plus body and flavour intensity.  It has a buttery texture and gives some acidic prickle in your mouth.  Medium-plus length.

Meyer Family Vineyards McLean Creek Road Vineyard Gewurztraminer 2022 (BC $17.48)

From the winery, “The first batch of fruit harvested was loaded straight from the vineyard into the press and was slowly and gently whole bunch pressed to maximize juice quality without extracting harsh flavours. The later pick was destemmed and slightly crushed and left to soak with the skins for 24 hours, then gently pressed. Both lots were combined, and a long cool indigenous fermentation occurred in stainless steel vats and older seasoned French oak barrels lasting four weeks. The wine was left on its fine lees for a further four months. No malolactic fermentation occurred.”  450 cases were produced.

Appearance: A clear, bright, medium-minus intensity mix of straw and lemon colours.
Nose: Medium-minus intensity aromas of lychee and roses, plus touches of spearmint and lime.  Pretty aromas. The aroma intensity bumps up to medium after decanting.
Palate: This wine is dry, with medium-plus body and flavour intensity.  Smooth and round but not quite mouth-filling.  Roses and lychee along with some grape steam and touches of spearmint and pine needle.  The lychee flavour gets stronger toward the finish.  Medium acidity leaves a touch of prickle on your tongue. More spearmint flavour and less roses and lychee after decanting, plus the wine becomes more mouth-filling.
Finish: A medium-plus length finishing with a smooth mouthfeel, and flavours of roses, lychee, and some pepperiness. About the same finish with decanting.

No need to decant, unless you prefer more spearmint and less roses and lychee flavour in your Gewurztraminer.

Rating: 4 stars  A Gewurztraminer that is quite enjoyable full of lychee and roses aromas and flavours upon opening the bottle.  It is smooth and round with medium acidity.  Medium-plus length.
